“I feel like this is a love letter of sorts from Millar to all those classic pulp stories. I'm glad he shared it with all of us.” -- Kirkus

“It's sentimental and honest, romantic and sincere, completely unabashed in its nostalgic reverence for old fashioned pulp. In doing something different, Millar has created one of his best books yet.” - IGN

“...the book is on its way to being an inter-stellar hit and I'm definitely strapping up for the ride.” - Bleeding Cool

Flash Gordon Meets Gran Torino
By Stigmata67
Mark Millar can be an acquired taste, no doubt, but for once he's written a book that could as easily be read by kids as adults, a tremendously fun adventure tale that eschews his usual violence, misanthropy and juvenilia (ironically, the more "adult" a Millar book, the more adolescent its content). I imagine the pitch for this must have been "Flash Gordon meets Gran Torino" as it shares more than a few story beats with that late-period Eastwood film as it unfolds the story of an Earthbound pilot who accidentally became a space-faring adventurer and saved a distant world in the bargain. Now forty years older and mourning the loss of his beloved wife, being ignored and dismissed by his self-involved adult sons, and feeling the emptiness in his life along with the creak in his bones, he's recruited by a young emissary from the planet he once saved to come back and do it all over again. He moves quickly from reluctance to enthusiasm in setting right the wrongs that have befallen Tantalus in his absence, and living up to the legend that's only grown in the intervening years.

The story moves quickly, and while there's a few dark twists and turns, it never loses the sense of unbridled fun that a Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers pastiche should maintain. It's a very optimistic, even idealistic story, with gorgeous artwork by Goran Pavlov. I know it's already been optioned as a movie, and I kept thinking it could make a great one in the right hands with someone like Bruce Willis, hell, even Schwarzenegger, in the role of the past-his-prime-but-still-an-extraordinary-badass hero.

Fun fantasy tale
By DJ Joe Sixpack
"Starlight" Volume One"
Written by Mark Millar
Illustrated by Goran Parlov
(Image Comics, 2015)
. . . . .

This was a fast, fun, escapist fantasy tale about an Adam Strange/Flash Gordon/John Carter adventurer who, having braved the cosmos in his youth, returned to Earth and got stuck in a mundane, middle-class rut, ala Mr. Incredible. Devoted to his wife and family, for their sake he learned to endure the jibes of the folks back on Earth who didn't believe his space stories, and settled into the everyday world, even though the universe beckoned. When the sixty-something Duke McQueen is called back to a faraway world he freed in his younger years, he doubts he's the right man to save them again, but old habits die hard, especially in the face of cosmic-level injustice.

What was refreshing about this book was that it didn't have some arch, ironic postmodernist edge... Breaking out of his own patterns, author Mark Millar resists the temptation to use this story as a platform to deconstruct space epics and show us another depraved, 21st Century slaughterfest of flying teeth and cracking bones. Oh sure, McQueen is a ruthless combatant, and he vaporizes bad guys and lasers them in half a couple of times, but the violence isn't as gratuitous or grotesque as most modern superbooks, and it's a welcome change of pace. Like the first (1977) "Star Wars" movie, this story feels like an honest homage to an earlier era of more innocent entertainment, and as a result is far more entertaining than many of the bleak, dystopian graphic novels of today. Much of the pleasure is also due to the sleek artwork by Goran Pavlov, which echoes that of Joe Kubert, Moebius and Alex Toth -- old-school, uncluttered, kinetic and comforting in much the same way as the script. There's no big reveal where we learn what that the hero is a sadistic d***head, or crypto-facist tyrant in the making... The battle of Good vs. Evil is presented in a clean, uncomplicated narrative, one that can be enjoyed by readers young and old. Hooray. More stuff like this would be nice. A joyride back to an older era of sci-fi.
By Richard
Starlight is a retro sci-fi inspired story in the style of the old Flash Gordon era space adventures. The twist being that the hero is an old retired hero called back to action long after his prime.

This story follows Duke McQueen, who when he was younger saved a distant alien civilization. When he returned to Earth he tried to tell his story but became a laughing stock as nobody believed him. Fast forward to his elder years and he is suddenly contacted by a young alien who is desperately seeking the legendary hero who saved his homeworld. It is time for Duke to become a hero again.

The story and art style is overall very in line with how the older sci-fi genre used to be, with a decent self contained story. If you are a fan of older science fiction this is a decent read, even if it doesn't do anything particularly new with the genre.
