"Leah's Voice," �is a great story about accepting each and every person and treating everyone with respect and kindness.�

This is a great story that discusses children with special needs. �The lesson shared at the end of the story is an important one for children to learn and one that adults should also remember day after day. The illustrations throughout the book are well-done as they are bright, filled with detail and go along with the text nicely.

The 28 page picture is about a sibling with autism but its important message on the acceptance of differences and treating everyone with kindness and respect �is for all children. Reading Leah's Voice with your children or to a class is the perfect way to open up discussions on children with special need, accepting differences, respecting and including others. �

Not just about Autism, but about patience and being a good sibling

Leah's Voice isn't just a "difficult subject" book. It isn't just about Autism. And the author's goal isn't just to help kids "cope with" an Autistic sibling. Lori Demonia knows first hand that there are many challenges that the sibling of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder faces--their sibling's behavior may sometimes be confusing or frustrating, their friends may not be as understanding about why their sibling is different--but she also knows that having a sibling with ASD isn't some constant burden that kids need to "deal with." Siblings love each other! And siblings fight. And they misunderstand and get frustrated. Just like...well...SIBLINGS.

In the book, a little girl named Logan is excited for a play date with her new friend Abby. But when Abby doesn't want to play with Logan's older sister, Leah, because she talks differently and plays differently, Logan gets mad. Why can't Abby understand that Leah is different, but that they can all play together? The book then explores other ways in which Logan and Leah are different (Leah didn't like the movie theatre and started crying, Leah is a great artist and helps Logan paint pictures). Logan understands that her sister has Autism, but she doesn't know how to explain it to her friend. Eventually Abby comes around and realizes that she should be patient and take the time to get to know Leah.

What I like most about this book is that it is, first and foremost, a good children's book. The story is well-told, the characters' feelings are revealed through their actions not just stated by the author (a hallmark of good writing, in my opinion, and one that is overlooked by many seasoned authors of adult literature) and the illustrations are beautiful. I read this book with my three-year-old daughter, Magda, and even though she is considerably younger than the target audience she found the book engaging and asked to read it over and over again. It also prompted a lot of discussion after.

It's a book that I could see children relating to if they do have a friend or sibling with Autism, but it's also a book that I would recommend as an addition to any family or classroom bookshelf.

Charming children's story with life lesson

Leah's Voice teaches an important life lesson that a lot of adults could learn as well as children. The author, Lori DeMonia, writes from her heart, but in terms appropriate for young children. The illustrations are soft and make a very nice addition to the story.

In this monumental biography of one of Russia's-and the 20th century's-greatest poets, Reeder, editor of the poet's complete works, deftly combines incisive literary analysis with a complex portrait of Akhmatova (1889-1966) and her turbulent times. Initially influenced by the Symbolists and Imagists, the poet became more oracular, moving from the "chamber intimacy" of her earlier work to poetry that increasingly addressed the oppressiveness of the Russian people: "I-am your voice," one poem proclaims. So fervently did Akhmatova embrace this role that Stalin's regime suppressed her poetry for 20 years. Drawing upon interviews with the poet's friends and colleagues, some interviewed for the first time for publication, Reeder humanizes a woman lionized by the Russian people. Oppressed by governmental scrutiny, she was sometimes afraid to commit poetry to paper, relying instead on her memory and on those of her friends. Her romantic entanglements with Modigliani and Pasternak (whose persistent advances she rebuffed), as well as a sense of self-mockery about her exalted status, give further depth to Reeder's absorbing study. "The chamber intimacy of Akhmatova... what meaning [does it] have for our harsh, iron age?" asked the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky in the early days of the revolution. That intimacy has in fact proved remarkably enduring, but for decades Akhmatova faced censure, deprivation, and the imprisonment and death of loved ones before her genius-recognized in the early 1900s-was again acknowledged by the regime. Reeder, editor of The Complete Works of Anna Akhamatova (LJ 4/1/90), does not emulate her subject's spare, lucid verse, offering instead a richly detailed, exhaustively-indeed, exhaustingly-researched work. She brings in other writers with whom Akhmatova was linked, analyzing and quoting from their works as well as Akhmatova's, and while the result is a nice overview of the era, the poet does get lost in the process. Reeder seems to have hunted down every last reminiscence, however peripheral, and some filtering might have resulted in a stronger portrait. Still, this major study of a major poet usefully assembles a breadth of material. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

One of Russia's greatest poets, Akhmatova (1889-1966) was born as the curtain fell on Imperial Russia and lived to endure and write about the deprivations and horrors of the Soviet regime. A profoundly private person, Akhmatova is not an easy subject for a in-depth psychological portrait, but Reeder has done well with the material at hand, illuminating both Akhmatova and her world. Akhmatova's childhood was not a happy one, but she felt a distinct sense of destiny about her future, a prescience she possessed throughout her difficult life. Her first book of poems, Evening, was published in 1912 and Akhmatova, slender and regal, was soon at the very center of St. Petersburg's literary circle. An admirer of Pushkin, Akhmatova created emotional resonance with simple words linked in unexpected combinations. She also managed to fill her poems with the sort of dynamic psychology found in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Deeply patriotic, Akhmatova refused to leave her poor crushed country even after she was no longer allowed to publish, and her son was imprisoned and tortured. Indigestible

This is an exhaustively researched biography; no stone is left unturned in the names, places, dates and events of the poet Akhmatova's life. However, Reeder doesn't seem to manage compiling the mountain of data into a flowing narrative. The effect is a bit like watching a homemade movie made with a handheld camera, constantly zooming around and giving a sudden close-up of something. Suddenly, you'll get several pages in which she heavily excerpts other works about a particular person's life, even at the expense of shining any light on Akhamatova herself. In the section she devotes to the poet Osip Mandelstam, we are suddenly told that he "had the brilliant idea of getting a cow" to survive his exile. In fact, his widow Nadezhda wrote in her superlative memoir that getting a cow was her idea and (Osip) was "not keen on my plan ... 'Nothing ever comes of such schemes,' he said." Ultimately, Reeder's biography feels a bit clinical. She does a good job at analyzing the poetry, but Akhmatova herself eludes us. Akhmatova had a fascinating beauty. Painted and photographed by many.

She was a great poet who evolved during

Un imaginable tumolt . She witnessed this & uncannily endured.

But what an undivided love and loyalty

left over riding

for this place called Russia.

What a strange continent this must be..

What a place of paradoxs, Russia must be.

This rich bio lends all of that.

One of my FAVORITE biographies, ever!

Useful book for learning to play drums for worship songs

This is a very nice and practical book for learning: it shows quite some grooves and variations grouped in basic rhythms and styles like shuffle, swing, rock, etc, always with a short list of worship songs where you can use this groove, not to duplicate the song, but to start to have an idea where to look for the right feel.

Clearly Tapped into Fundamental Reality

Have read a lot of books (and bought a lot more) in a long life...and have never encountered one like this. Truthfully, I have barely scratched the surface of what it offers but it is such a fount for grokking Life, that I am always rewarded when I dip in. When I read its words, they call me to fully be who I came here to be.

This has profound DEPTH...opening channels with the heart of Creation. What more might we ask? Believe the fact that I have given away 4 copies of this in the six months since I encountered it speaks of how highly I value it...

I can't the depth in which this book engages you. I found myself lost and then found within the pages of this deep and inspiring book of wisdom. If everyone knew their gene code this world would find peace... I knew the I-Ching is a great resource but I never knew the depth of wisdom it evokes to all who have the ears and heart to take it in. The Gene Keys is a precious book because of how it is written. The author is someone I would like to meet because he has discovered a depth of wisdom that moves mountains. Thank the heavens for such a masterful piece of work...
