From cell phones and television remote controls to automobile engines and spacecraft, microcontrollers are everywhere. Programming these prolific devices is a much more involved and integrated task than it is for general-purpose microprocessors; microcontroller programmers must be fluent in application development, systems programming, and I/O operation as well as memory management and system timing.

Using the popular and pervasive mid-range 8-bit Microchip PIC as an archetype, Microcontroller Programming offers a self-contained presentation of the multidisciplinary tools needed to design and implement modern embedded systems and microcontrollers. The authors begin with basic electronics, number systems, and data concepts followed by digital logic, arithmetic, conversions, circuits, and circuit components to build a firm background in the computer science and electronics fundamentals involved in programming microcontrollers.

For the remainder of the book, they focus on PIC architecture and programming tools and work systematically through programming various functions, modules, and devices. Helpful appendices supply the full mid-range PIC instruction set as well as additional programming solutions, a guide to resistor color codes, and a concise method for building custom circuit boards.

Providing just the right mix of theory and practical guidance, Microcontroller Programming: The Microchip PIC is the ideal tool for any amateur or professional designing and implementing stand-alone systems for a wide variety of applications.

Not worth the price.
By Stewart
My experience of this book was quite different from that expressed in the earlier review. I was repeatedly frustrated. Many terms and concepts were introduced without any explanation or description, ever. Far too many pages contained long programs which did not appear to reflect either the best programming or pedagogical practice. Despite the length of this book, the range and depth of actual Microchip programming technique coverage seemed superficial.

Finally -- A Decent Book On A Long Overdue Subject
By James Sweetack
This book has it all for the beginner to the advanced. I only wish I had access to this book last year before I started PICMicro programming. It would have saved me countless hours of web searches. I swear, every aspect (and more) of programming PICs I have researched and bookmarked is here in this book. Many examples to be used and expanded upon easily. Only wish they would have used the more current 16F628A as a basis instead of the outdated 16F84A -- although to be fair, the examples can be used for any of the entire line 8-bit microcontrollers with only minor modifications (like telling the compiler it's a different chip and changing which pins for out and in -- easy). Serial communications, LCD interfacing, external EEPROM use, RTC's -- this book has it all. Should be used as a textbook for a course -- very comprehensive, not to mention up-to-date info on this subject (for once!). Quite pricey but worth it if you want to save yourself time and have ONE place to go for reference.

So many of the great pianists and teachers have come out of Poland and Russia (Rubinstein, Anton as well as Arthur, Leschetizky, Paderewski, the Lhevinnes, Gilels, Richter, and others), yet we know little about their methods of learning and teaching. George Kochevitsky in The Art of Piano Playing supplies some important sources of information previously unavailable in this country. Russian sources alone occupy four columns of his bibliography on 'History and Theory of Pianism.' Additionally there are six columns of German sources and seven columns of sources in English. From these sources, tempered by this own thinking, Kochevitsky has formulated a scientific approach that can solve most problems of piano playing and teaching. George Kochevitsky graduated in 1930 from Leningrad Conservatory and did post-graduate work at Moscow Conservatory. Coming to the U.S., he has taught privately in New York City, given a number of lectures, and written for various music periodicals.

Too heavy on the theoretical side
By frankp93
I read somewhere that if you can take one good idea away from reading a book, consider the experience a success. Call me greedy, but I expected more practical advice from "The Art of Piano Playing". The author's intent is to show how the central nervous system plays a primary role in the learning/performing process. He makes his case with an historical survey of earlier schools of thought concerning piano technique that, according to the author, culminated in an impasse in the early twentieth century. As scientific research into brain functioning progressed, the tools were now in place to make a case for the neurobiological basis of piano technique. What this boils down to is, essentially: 1) the aural image one creates in the mind of a musical composition is paramount and the urge to recreate that image will drive the learning and performing process. 2) practice slowly to establish and engrain neurological connections. 3) be flexible in your technique regarding fingering, arm position, etc. 4) the most effective learning is accompanied by intense concentration.
I've simplified, but this is what I walked away with. Unfortunately, the author spends more time justifying his theoretical argument than describing the practical application of his ideas. The book was written in 1967 when perhaps these thoughts were more radical. If you're intrigued and enjoy a heavy scientific bent, this book might be for you, but if you're looking for detailed practical advice on piano technique, I'm afraid other authors have done it better.

Probably the best book on the mind/body/nervous system/piano relationship
By Baz
I agree with the previous reviewer that this book can be heavy going, though after repeated readings none of the writing seems to me to be waffle or redundant. However, this is more than compensated for by the breadth of coverage of the various schools of piano pedagogy and the problems associated with each. The amount of research that Kochevitsky displays both scientifically with relation to piano playing and piano pedagogy itself is simply awesome (the bibiliography will blow your mind!)

It seems to me that this book needs careful and repeated reading to get the best out of it. There are real nuggets to be mined, but they're buried in the rubble of explanation instead of being clearly dug out into a separate chapter.

Even at the beginning of the 21st century, almost all the old books on piano playing can still be easily found and one of this book's great merits is the careful deconstruction of all that's misguided in all of them. It seems that the great pianists have become great through their own analysis and musical genius despite the teaching of any one school.

It's easy to miss this book in looking for the best in learning the piano. I've read almost all of them before finding it. But there's a LOT in here and I highly recommend a careful study of this book if you find your playing has hit a brick wall.

The Art of Piano Playing
By Miguel Gonalves Henriques
Almost everything is said about Kochevitsky's book. Nevertheless I do not think it as a heavy book (80 pages??). Its bibliography is thouroughly relevant but unfortunately the russian titles are still unkonown in the west. Fortunately we have now one or two works from Grigory Kogan translated. But still, in the piano concertizing profession, people rarely take the time to read about this kind of subject. Unfortunately again many piano teachers come up with their own methods withou prior knowledge of all this body work of research. Many guru-like methods and approaches intoxicate this literature market. I consider Kochevistky's book practical and exhaustive. You just have to take the time to think and to learn what he is talking about, and often this requires some experience and humbleness. Personally I recommend it highly to all advanced pianists and students.

Decent overview
By Amazon Customer
First off, this book is a very general overwiew of Wing Chun, not a comprehensive source on anything specific like WC History, WC Mechanics, the various Forms, etc. So if that is what you are looking for, then there are "better" books that would fulfill that more adequately. A lot of reviews do point this out, but I want to emphasize it again since someone might think it is more exhaustive or detailed than it really is, and be dissapointed in the process.

So in light of that, Ip Chun does an excellent job introducing the system of Wing Chun as popularized by his father Ip Man. You could know literally nothing about Wing Chun and be able to follow this book, as he makes no assumptions that someone is a practicioner or versed in terminology. The book also reads well, it is conversational instead of reading like an encylopedia or reference manual.

My main complaint is that since they chose to photograph and present SNT (the first and most foundational form), the photographs show too little for a beginner to grasp the movements. The explanations do not go into detail and explain the underlying concepts of the movements either. So for someone familiar with the form like myself, there is little to glean from this main section of the book. Conversely, for a potential beginner, the provided photos skip way too much movement to grasp correctly, and explanations lack detail for them to gain proper understanding.

While I enoyed reading the book, and it was worthwhile, it is more of a book to read and give away or loan out to others interested in Wing Chun, versus a book to keep and refer back to. There are just too many other more exhaustive books out there now. I gave it 4 stars for this purpose and also because it is from one of SiFu Ip Man's son's, Ip Chun, his most visible heir within the WC world.

You will enjoy reading it.........and you will learn something or improve how you teach others....
By Armando Ramirez
I like reading anything either of the two brothers (sons of Ip Man) put out, there is always something to learn from these old masters. The way it has been explained to me is that they share a common core of knowledge but each learned somethings from Ip Man that the other did not. We have to get it from when while we still have them. I am fortunate that my Sifu studied directly under both of them (and Simon Lau and Wong Shun Leung). So much knowledge and wisdom, so little time left to absorb it....

You can't learn Wing Chun from a book, but you can improve and refine what you have been taught by your Sifu......sometime reading it makes it click or gives you a different pointer that works for you.....

You will enjoy reading it....

From Library Journal
These days, what can a writer do to make his vampire novel stand out from the pack? In Lord of the Dead (LJ 1/96), Holland made Lord Byron one, and he brings his vampire Byron back in this new novel, narrated in part by Bram Stoker. Like Stoker's masterpiece, this book is arranged as a series of letters, journal, and diary entries. Stoker here plays Doctor Watson to a Doctor John Eliot's Sherlock Holmes. The book's opening section, though, comes right out of the movie Gunga Din, complete with a deadly battle atop a tower against the forces of Kali. But in this novel, those forces are not thugs but zombies, and Kali is not just a statue but a supernatural power who summons Jack the Ripper into the book. Holland mixes all of these associations together and serves up an entertaining concoction all his own. Literary junk food, perhaps, but you won't stop after just one bite. Highly recommended.?Charles Michaud, Turner Free Lib., Randolph, Mass.

From Booklist
In his previous book, Lord of the Dead (1995), Holland turned Lord Byron into a vampire; in this one, he uses the vampire myth to explore reason versus passion in Victorian England. An introductory note by "Abraham Stoker" (the book is full of literary jokes) sets the mood by warning the reader of the danger in this "body of papers," which includes chapters from a book about India and excerpts from letters and diaries. The section in India is told by a charmingly pompous British officer sent to Kalikshutra on India's border, where Russians are infiltrating. There, he meets an English doctor studying a local "disease" that seems to turn people into vampires. The action moves quickly in this section, but after 75 pages, the scene and teller shift to London and the English doctor John Eliot. He is a less humorous storyteller, but the tale builds new momentum when an old friend asks him to investigate the disappearance of her husband, who just happens to be presenting a bill in Parliament about Kalikshutra. His search leads him through the real Victorian London (meeting Conan Doyle, Oscar Wilde, and some surprises) and the spiritual world behind it. Holland does a good job of pacing the discoveries in this page-turner. Fans of vampire stories, mysteries, spiritual musings, and Victorian London will clamor for this one. Kevin Grandfield

From Kirkus Reviews
The author of Lord of the Dead (1995), the story of the wildly bipolar Lord Byron becoming ruler of the planet's vampires at age 19, returns with a sequel and a fresh look at London's bloodsuckers. The story opens as a satirically rip-roaring 19th-century boy's adventure modeled on Gunga Din. A small group of ramrod British soldiers attack a temple of Kali high up in the Himalayas, only to find themselves facing Russian zombie/vampires enthralled by the goddess of destruction-and-bloodlust: She takes the form of a ravishingly beautiful vision of sexual horror named Lilah, who later turns up in London. The very amusing first 70 pages--as stiff-lipped British noncoms battle flesh-eating ghouls, and as Dr. John Eliot, also in India, investigates a horrible infection that melts brains and wastes the body, as well as a princely fortune that suddenly vanishes--are worth the ticket price. Eliot's research eventually sets him on Lilah's trail. Back in London, he's joined by theater manager Bram Stoker, who has not yet written Dracula but becomes knowledgeable about vampires while playing muddle-brow Watson to Eliot's Holmes. Eliot is enjoined by a young actress, Miss Lucy Ruthven, to look into her brother Arthur's murder and the disappearance of her guardian, Sir George Mowberley. The two men had been heading a parliamentary bill that would have a major impact on India. Trailing the lost jewels of Kalikshutra at last leads Eliot to Lilah and to a ghastly facedown with this supremely corrupted immortal who bathes in blood in a golden tub. Then come the real surprises--and Byron's return. The Victorian voice used throughout may have been fun to mimic, but Holland's own voice would have given him more intensity. Even Dracula's epistolary style can stultify. -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Good but.........

really a very entertaining book, but could have done without some much gore and sex at the end. Yes I understand it's a vampire story and these things are excepted, but I think Holland went just bit too far. I felt it really lowered the whole level of what was an excellent story. However if you have not read Dracula, I would suggest you do that first before reading this book. If you are at all sqeamish, don't read this book.Dracula (Enriched Classics)

Adventure--and transformation
By Minsma
*Slave of My Thirst* is an engaging trip through a number of narrative styles, from an hilariously oafish British colonial officer, to Bram Stoker's journal, to the diary of the Sherlock Holmes-like hero, Jack Eliot, and beyond. Each voice is distinctive, advancing the plot from its own point of view, making for an interesting journey from the remote mountain passes of India to the slums of London, from the vampiric worshippers of the goddess Kali, to the prostitutes and opium addicts of Whitechapel. Although overall I would say this is a "ripping good yarn," it transforms itself over the course of its varied narratives from a 19th century adventure story into something else, quite rich and strange. Jack Eliot, accompanied by Bram Stoker, tries to rescue one of Jack's old friends, and also to protect a young actress of Stoker's acquaintance from a web of intrigue which boggles the rational, Victorian minds of the two men. Holland has written passages of almost hypnotic sensuality (which were also interesting in his other vampire novel, *Lord of the Dead*), interspersed with a claustrophobic sense of being trapped in a life not of one's choosing, and with deliciously amorale characters. *Slave of My Thirst* seduces with a plot which masquerades as a linear adventure story, then broadens out into nearly hallucinogenic fantasy, and ultimately returns to being a thriller. Dr. Jack Eliot and friends may start off as fearless vampire killers, but they end up being transformed by their experiences--sometimes quite literally.

Wanting more...
By Lauren
Having recently read Holland's first Byron novel, _Lord of the Dead_, i couldn't wait to read this one, and I was not disappointed at all. I've read all of the reviews saying how contrived the historial characters are, and i strongly disagree. Bram Stoker is exactly how i imagined him, a sweet yet doddering man with a simple life with a simple inspired idea for a novel. Jack is even more interesting in the novel, drawing the reader into his carnal lust for death and resentment towards the filth of the world. Polidori is great and annoying at the same time as usual, and of course, Byron is terrific and beautifully portrayed as well.
The book had no slow parts whatsoever, every page was filled with mystery and deceit and wonderful descriptions of its characters. The climax was tremendous and it made my heart beat faster as i turned the pages, afraid and expectant.
I don't want to give away too much, but as a suggestion to readers, pay close attention to the beggining of the story with Moorefield and the army guys, you won't regret it even though it is a little bit tedious compared to the meat of the book itself.
I seriously want more Byron, especially after the end comment from Jack (if anyone knows what i am saying!).

Heidegger and the Work of Art HistoryFrom Routledge

Heidegger and the Work of Art History explores the impact and future possibilities of Heidegger’s philosophy for art history and visual culture in the twenty-first century. Scholars from the fields of art history, visual and material studies, design, philosophy, aesthetics and new media pursue diverse lines of thinking that have departed from Heidegger’s work in order to foster compelling new accounts of works of art and their historicity. This collected book of essays also shows how studies in the history and theory of the visual enrich our understanding of Heidegger’s philosophy. In addition to examining the philosopher's lively collaborations with art historians, and how his longstanding engagement with the visual arts influenced his conceptualization of history, the essays in this volume consider the ontological and ethical implications of our encounters with works of art, the visual techniques that form worlds, how to think about ’things’ beyond human-centred relationships, the moods, dispositions, and politics of art’s history, and the terms by which we might rethink aesthetic judgment and the interpretation of the visible world, from the early modern period to the present day.

"At low tide, the wind blowing across Spartina grass sounds like wind of the prairie. When the tide is in, the gentle music of moving water is added to the prairie rustle.... "

One of nature's greatest gifts is the string of salt marshes that edges the East Coast from Newfoundland to Florida -- a ribbon of green growth, part solid land, part scurrying water. Life and Death of the Salt Marsh shows how these marshes are developed, what kinds of life inhabit them, how enormously they have contributed to man, and how ruthlessly man is destroying them.

THEY PRACTICED WHAT THEY PREACHED
By Loren D. Morrison
Sometime between 1970 and 1975, my family and I spent a week with friends who lived in Falmouth, on Cape Cod. Because one of our friends was a Marine Biologist at Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute and worked with John Teal, one of the authors of this book, we were lucky enough to attend a Fourth of July Celebration at the Teal's farm.
John and Mildred had purchased a colonial era Cape Cod farmhouse and the hundred or so acres that surrounded it. Other than hot and cold running water, electricity and natural gas, and a slightly modernized kitchen (i.e. the stove used gas rather than burning wood), the house looked much as it had when it had been built.
As might be expected, the Teal's Independence Day celebration was ecologically sound and reflected the era in which the farmhouse was built. The children got rides on one of the more tame domesticated goats, the women competed in tossing a rolling pin for distance and accuracy, and the men tried out old fashioned farm implements. The food was prepared from hand gathered and harvested local foods. For instance we had mussel salad made from mussels that I had help gather the day before. There were cranberries from one of the Cape's cranberry bogs, and quahogs and oysters dug up just long enough ago to let them naturally filter out the sand.
The point of all this is that the Teals believed in and acted on the ecological and preservationist principles that they espoused in their book. In LIFE AND DEATH OF THE SALT MARSH, they do a wonderful job of discussing how a salt marsh is formed, how long it takes, and how ecologically fragile it is. They make the point that man can, and does, destroy in a decade or less what it has taken nature centuries to build. Since, as they point out, the salt marshes play an important part in nature's food chain and ultimately in the life cycles of many species, when we damage or destroy these natural habitats, the consequences can be disastrous.
If we all could live a little more like the Teals were living, our children and their children might still have some of nature's bounty left to enjoy in future years.
It is my opinion that this is one of those books that ought to be compulsory reading for every thinking human being.

A few feet above high tide from Maine to Florida
By Gary Sprandel
The book promotes an awareness of the salt marsh ... from glacial history to the hunting of doughbirds (Eskimo curlews). Though salt marshes don't have high species diversity, the Teal's cover the range from Spartina and Juncus plants (and sawgrass in Florida), to the economically important Blue Crabs, to annoying insects like greenheads and deerfly. From the salt marsh detritus, is the nutrient soup that becomes the basis for the shrimp and mullet we love to eat.
The Teals also offer conservation ideas. When the book was written (1969), DDT was not yet banned. The chapter on mosquito control is enlightening ... and with the occurrence of West Nile Virus, there will be more pressure on mosquito control, so one hopes it is balanced. The history of marsh destruction in Boston is illustrative. The good news is that in the 1950's the rate of coastal wetland loss was about 46,000 acres/year, but today it is around 20-25,000 per year. Unfortunately pressures of coastal development continue. This book helps me feel lucky to live near Florida "Big Bend" with large stretches of Gulf salt marsh from the Ochlockonee River south to St. Petersburg.

Lots of info on the ecology of the salt marsh ecosystem.
By A Customer
Life and Death of the Salt Marsh. Teal, John and Mildred. Atlantic Monthly Press, Boston. 1969.
Life and Death of the Salt Marsh is a book that focuses on many aspects of the ecology of the salt marsh. To quote the authors, it is "about the marshes of the East Coast of North America: how they were formed; why they continue to exist; the interplay of plants and animals; and the effect of that influential animal, man." This book does a very thorough job of covering all these topics. It begins with the story of one particular salt marsh, how it formed, what happened to it when colonists first arrived and used it for hay production, and its eventual death after human impact became so great as to prevent marsh recovery. The remainder of the book gives detailed descriptions of the processes and organisms that affect the salt marsh. These include the geology, history of glaciation, plant and animal species, seasons, and topics relating to marsh pollution and conservation. Considering that this book was written in 1969, thirty years ago, it still seems to have good scientific accuracy. The details concerning the geology and species of the marsh probably have not changed much in the past thirty years. The dominant species of the salt marsh are the Spartina grasses. These grasses were often gathered as feed for livestock during early settlement. Many birds make there home in the salt marsh and were often hunted for food. It is interesting to look at this book from a historical perspective, especially the sections on conservation. Preservation of marshes is important for many reasons. The main reason for preservation being that a large variety of species rely on salt marshes during part or all of their life cycle. Many of these species are commercially viable and are (or were when the book was written) important to the East Coast economy. The chapter on pollution control was very interesting because it includes discussion of the use of DDT. Most ecologist today have heard of or read Silent Spring and know about the dangers of DDT. Life and Death of the Salt Marsh was written just before Silent Spring, by Janet Carson, and brings up the many dangers and harmful side effects of DDT. Obvious DDT was an area of concern for many people in fields related to ecology in the late 60's. It is interesting that a recommendation is made to use only minimum levels of DDT is specific areas, instead of a complete discontinuation of its use. The entire book could be related to many aspects of ecology and is thus relevant to anyone interested in the ecology of salt marshes. The first section of the book, the actual story of the life and death of a specific salt marsh, is easy to read and entertaining. It provides an overview of much of the information presented later in greater detail. I would recommend just Part 1 to any one interested in an overview of marshes and the effects of human settlement near or on them. Someone reading just this section would learn a great deal about the ecology of the salt marsh. Later sections are a bit more technical then the first and take longer to read. They do however provide very specific and useful information in a way much more enjoyable then something like a text book. These later sections should be read by anyone planning to do research in or near salt marshes. They could also be used as a reference. For example, someone interested in mosquito control problems in marshes would find it very useful to read that specific chapter. Despite the fact that this book was written 30 years ago I would still recommend it to anyone interested in marshes or other types of wetlands. The information is provided in a clear and fairly interesting manner and could be applied to other areas. At the least it is a good introduction to the many interrelating aspects of an ecosystem and why they should all be considered before destroying or preserving an area.

Finding Oil: The Nature of Petroleum Geology, 1859-1920, by Brian Frehner

Oil has made fortunes, caused wars, and shaped nations. Accordingly, no one questions the idea that the quest for oil is a quest for power. The question we should ask, Finding Oil suggests, is what kind of power prospectors have wanted. This book revises oil’s early history by exploring the incredibly varied stories of the men who pitted themselves against nature to unleash the power of oil.
Brian Frehner shows how, despite the towering presence of a figure like John D. Rockefeller as a quintessential “oil man,” prospectors were a diverse lot who saw themselves, their interests, and their relationships with nature in profoundly different ways. He traces their various pursuits of power from 1859 to 1920 as a struggle for cultural, intellectual, and professional authority, over both nature and their peers. Here we see how some saw power as the work they did exploring and drilling into landscapes, while others saw it in the intellectual work of explaining how and where oil accumulated. Charting the intersection of human and natural history, their story traces the ever-evolving relationship between science and industry and reveals the unsuspected role geology played in shaping our understanding of the history of oil.
