This is a nice compendium of hypnosis induction scripts. They are well written and perfect for hypnosis, there are no "loop holes" that the brain may take when not enough is said or it isn't said properly. There's a very good variety and a different selection of scripts. Good variety for a variety of people, as not every style is ideal for everyone. For instance, since I am a bad visualizer and can't relax easily, so there are many kinds of inductions that just don't work for me. Those type of inductions are what you find in most other hypnosis books which is terribly frustrating for me. But there are many options for me in this book! At the beginning of each section is advantages and disadvantages of each style of induction, as well as uses and the basic principle of said style. This makes it much easier to select a script that the one being hypnotized will work best with.

The writing is nice, but there's this weird table thing used for the actual scripts, which is a bit annoying (though makes the organization nice) but makes it impossible to use from a phone. I have to use this on my ipad or laptop, my iphone is a no-go. The table gives the scripts with headers to break down each section and tells which goal (technique) each paragraph of the induction is aiming for. This can help you tailor your own scripts as well as solidify your intentions for a more effective hypnosis. It is still a pain to read from the table, however. The scripts also detonate pauses with ellipses. And while that what the symbol is used for, with all the table lines and dot dot dots it is rather cluttered, visually.

A great part about this book is you can just go to a script and start reading if you already know the basics, which I can give you right now: Talk monotonously, pause often for words to set in (signified by ellipses or "..."), and maintain a very composed and relaxed confidence. Make sure all physical matters are handled before-hand (drinks, restroom, seated comfortably, silenced electronics, invest your time, ect...) and you can go! Patience is key for both the reader and the relaxer for hypnosis. You can't expect professional quality results without dedicating some real time and learning more about it, but you can have some fun with those you trust and who trust you.

Pros: Many scripts, different kinds of inductions, general variety. Written well without being verbose.
Cons: Layout of actual scripts is cluttered, can't be read easily from phone.

Final Statement: I'd buy it just for the amazing variety of scripts!

How to design and create an educational course

This book covers all the elements needed to create and design learning courses for adults. It is very detailed and academic in its writing style and structure. I would have preferred a more casual writing style. However the content and process is here whether you want to design an e-course, personal interest course, or a work shop. The books shows how to take a student through the complete process of learning a subject from start to finish, I believe this could even be used in colleges and tech schools for course design and implementation. Not an easy read but well worth the effort.

Creating Courses for Adults, curriculum prerequisite

As a former successful adult education instructor for a variety of writing courses, I enthusiastically awaited for the arrival of Creating Courses for Adults: Design for Learning by Ralf St. Clair. I felt this book would help me brush up on my skills to re-enter the classroom arena.

Once the book arrived, admittedly, I found it difficult to read through what I found to be someone dry, textbook-like material. The trick was, once I pushed through the drab text, I discovered a hodgepodge of practical information. In essence, Professor St. Clair offers a comprehensive perspective into the world of adult education and addresses nearly everything you need to navigate your way to success.

One thing I beg to differ with is when the author writes, "One influential factor is the educator's own educational experience. Somebody who did well at school when she was young, tended to be friendly with teachers, and enjoyed reading and writing will have a particular view of teaching and learning. An educator who disliked school, was uncomfortable with the authority of teachers, and hated sitting still at a desk will have a very different perspective."

I, for one, had far too many teachers who were self-indulged, incompetent, bias and really should not have been training show dogs, let alone children. Granted this was many moons ago in affluent Fairfield, Connecticut, but if you didn't conform to the preppy look, didn't excel in academics or sports, these teachers wouldn't give you the time of day. Not only did they flunk teaching, they perpetuated bullying in the classroom--which is another story.

Despite these teacher's inadequate methods of teaching, I, with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, virtually taught myself everything. I feel I am an exceptional teacher because I had a less than optimal learning environment and was determined to break out and be successful regardless of the opinions that my negative, limiting-belief teachers had about me.

Now, back to the rest of the book, here is what I found:

THUMBS UP:
1. Comprehensive information. You get a systematic approach, based on myriad areas of studies, to help you make your classroom rock.

2. The book is easy-to-follow and well-organized; information practical enough to be applied in a classroom setting.
The main crux addresses a three-core design for effective learning:
* Instructor factors
* Learner factors
* Context factors

3. Whether you are teaching personal development courses or professional development workshops, this book is for you since it stretches across a broad range of channels.

4. Rock solid research. Theory after theory, study after study, I'm quite sure Professor St. Clair had to give up many, if not all, extracurricular activities to write this impressive reference guide.
It is a remarkable accomplishment--even for someone in academia.

5. I paid special attention to the analogies since they are interesting and enhance the book as a whole and added some needed life into its pages (see #1 below under THUMBS DOWN).

THUMBS DOWN:
1. Again, the setback is the dry, textbook-like feel of this book. This is not the case in the entire book, but in the few sections that this problem arises, it does deter from the book's overall quality.

2. Typos. Gosh, the proof reader was not consistent in catching a few grammar gremlins.

THE NITTY-GRITTY:
If you are in the profession of teaching adults, you should know exactly where to find Creat-ing Courses for Adults: Design for Learning by Ralf St. Clair in your personal library, it's the best reference around. One caveat, though, you can plan, plan, plan, but in the final analysis, at least in my humble opinion, the best teaching environment happens organically and naturally so much so that you are watching the clock hoping it will slow down instead of speed up!

Contains useful schematics for developing both credit and non-credit courses

As a two-year college professor, I've been a fan of Jossey-Bass publications for years. They always put out thoughtful books that contain valuable information, and so I was eager to read this book to see if I could pick up some new ideas. Even though I'll be starting my twenty-second year of teaching this coming fall, I'm always on the lookout for new ideas to incorporate into my classes. I found this new book by Ralf St. Clair (which focuses on teaching both non-credit and credit courses) to be very useful.

As St. Clair states at the beginning of the Preface, "The big idea of this book is that education for adults has to be designed. Whether it's a one-hour class on wine tasting or a four-month language course, there are some key decisions that must be made as the course is crafted." To help achieve those goals, St. Clair breaks things into three core factors: matters that affect you as the educator, matters that affect your students, and matters that affect the course content itself. The central focus is on design since St. Clair believes that good course design helps create dynamic, engaged teachers and students.

To that end, St. Clair provides a Program Design Chart to help you build your course from the ground up, depending on your aims, methodologies, and values. He asks you to give careful attention to how each of these areas will impact your students.

Before purchasing this book, you'll also want to be open to using active learning, collaboration, and principles of student self-responsibility in your classes. I already use these methodologies when I teach, but I just wanted to point this out in case you don't.

St. Clair also uses nice analogies throughout the book, as well as good examples from the classroom. The book is also grounded in theory and research.

While a bit dry in places, this is overall a helpful book that asks the educator to reflect on her or his core beliefs and how she or he will bring those into each unique course.

Barnes explicitly warns against the trap that engagement at the required level can become obsessive and time consuming, and in a couple of nice vignettes he makes his point with wit and style. The New Author is a terrific companion for independent e-publishing and I recommend it.

What this book does and does not contain

The scope of this edition is deliberately limited to basic novel writing guidelines, first practical steps in building and operating a social media platform for authors, and the process of epublishing a novel on Amazon KDP and other market channels via Smashwords. A list of recommended further reading is provided that covers the subject matter, should readers wish to delve deeper into these areas.

This edition of The New Author does not contain a method approach to novel writing, advice on publishing in print or a prescriptive ‘silver bullet’ approach to ebook marketing.

The internet is a labyrinth of blogs, websites and web-based tools. User interfaces are constantly being improved, upgraded and changed. No screenshots have been included in this book in order to avoid early obsolescence and to keep the format and page display simple and readable. Truly helpful for the new and not so new author

This is an excellent Kindle ebook that really is written for the new author and will be immensely helpful to him or her. The whole process of writing a novel is covered, from start to finish (including how to format and publish on Kindle and Smashwords).

There are many ebooks on Kindle about how to write a novel, but it's not uncommon to come across some so badly written and edited that it's plain they won't be of any use to wannabe writers. In fact, their writers themselves need to consult a far better book on their own topic. And here is one for them now.

Not only is The New Author extremely well written by someone who knows what he's talking about, but the tone is also truly heartening for those who yearn to become published writers but just don't know where to start.

The writer doesn't attempt to go into writing technique in any great detail, but he provides an excellent summing up of the considerations to be borne in mind when embarking on a story, and also recommends other resources which go deeper into particular areas of technique.

Along with the revolution in publishing has come one in marketing, and the title The New Author can be taken to have a double meaning: it can refer not just to someone who aims to become an author for the first time, but also to the new online world with which more experienced authors must now become familiar. So the large section on marketing a novel online through social media and other methods is particularly relevant and welcome for authors at all stages of their careers.

After exploring the mad and slightly confusing aspects of self publishing, I was given 'The New Author' in an attempt to try and clarify all the 'whys and wherefores'. And it did! Other books I found very dry and left me feeling I was outside the head's office for being stupid. Ruby's way was a breath of fresh air. It was clear, informative and funny. He admits his own mistakes so you don't have to. It's a book you can dip in and out of, especially when it comes to promoting yourself. Technophobes need not apply or learn damn quick!
I would recommend this book to writers/authors willing to put themselves out there and a liking for turnips...

Probably the best one-stop shop for the indie author

There are swathes of books offering advice to the aspiring author about to launch his/her book onto the e-market, ranging from the excellent (David Gaughran's 'Let's Get Digital') to the rather glib and opportunistic (John Locke's one). Few have provided such a broad yet sufficiently deep introduction as this one. Ruby Barnes, a successful ebook author in his own right (and therefore someone who knows what he's talking about) takes the reader through every step of the process of producing, publishing and marketing an ebook, offering his personal experiences with regard to what seems to work and what doesn't. It's all done with a good deal of wry and at times earthy humour, something that's often lacking in this kind of book.

This won't of itself make a bestselling author out of you. It might not even make you a success. But it's the sort of book I wish I'd taken the trouble to seek out and read before I embarked on my own epublishing journey. It guides you between the pitfalls so that you at least stand a chance.

Highly recommended.
