A refreshing look at the real SS and its outlook

What is truly refreshing about this particular work is the author's sincere attempt to understand the thinking and ideas of National Socialism as reflected in its 'vanguard' so to speak in the form of the Schuetzstaffel. He managed to locate and study most of the published issues of 'Das Schwarzes Korps', the official journal of the SS, and to glean from its articles, essays, and journalistic trends, the world-view and direction of its editors and writers.

What does clearly emerge from this study is the fact of the revolutionary idealism of men like d'Alquen and other writers and editors, as well as those leading SS men such as Himmler, Heydrich, Johst, et al, who contributed to the journal or were greatly influenced by it. National Socialism remains largely misunderstood in the West, and one has to wonder if the war itself would even have occurred had a clearer perspective been prevalent in the late 1930s.

It would be nice to study this publication directly, but so far as is known there are only rare materials like this book, or 'facsimile reproductions' of some of its articles and editorial cartoons. Surely at some point, the University of Tuebingen would digitize and/or re-publish the entire series - or most thereof that remains extant - of this journal, for the use of other historians and all others with a strong interest in this area. The same useful goal would apply to seminal NS publications such as 'Signal', 'Das Reich', and others.

I strongly recommend this book, along with others such as 'Nazi Culture' by Mosse, to help gain in reaching an understanding of the nature and ideals of National Socialism.

First published in France, this extended allegory revolves around the idea that Mother Earth has a very bad cold, maybe even the flu, and needs rest and a little TLC. It’s a clever way to translate the need for sustainability to children, who can all relate to sniffles, coughs, and the fever. Earth is personified as a woman wearing a red muffler, cap, and flowered dress, who becomes increasingly ill: her coughs are like earthquake tremors; her fever produces warmer oceans; her sneezes produce tsunamis. The double-page illustrations contrast Earth (whose dress gets sootier as she gets sicker) with gray landscapes of smoke-belching pipes, corrugated cars, and a few brave flowers. Finally, a hero appears, a little boy who insists we give Earth the rest she needs. The final double-page spread nicely illustrates the book’s message with full-bloom color and an inspiring coda: “It’s never too late to start all over again.” A more sober successor to the environmental plea of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. Only So-so

The Earth has caught a cold, and its humanity's fault. One little boy decides to call attention to the problem, and help heal his home.

The illustrations are beautiful, the subject important, and the concept intriguing -- and yet, this book falls short on execution. Part of the problem is that the allegory is a tad too rich for little kids, and the other part is that the allegory is itself confusing. A fever is global warming, and huge waves are tsumanis -- both arguably affected by man. But other "symptoms" like her earthquake coughs and volcanic throw-ups have nothing to do with human action.

My daughter is very interested in things like pollution, trash, recycling, earthquakes, and volcanoes, yet this book fell flat for her -- and for me, too. But it is probably at least in part a stylist thing -- this book might go over well with people who like a flowery style of prose.

"The Earth Has Caught A Cold" is an imaginative tale about a boy who decides he must help the Earth get better somehow, since it has caught a cold. The answers to how he will accomplish this are described, suggested, and beautifully illustrated in the lovely paintings and pages of "The Earth Has Caught A Cold." Its final message of empowerment comes at the end, with a rainbow painted across the sky, and the realization that "It's never too late to start all over again." "The Earth Has Caught A Cold" is written to entice and enchant children ages 4-7.

Kid Review: Thoughts from a 3rd Grader

This is a good book for people to read when they are sick. They can relate. People from ages 1 through 102 will like this book. "Shhh" is a good thing to say to sick people because it will calm them down. It calmed the people down so they could hear what the earth needed. I like this book and want to make a poster out of this book. You will love it too!!! From, Brennan age 8

About the Author

Maggie Tallerman, Newcastle University,Kathleen R. Gibson, University of Texas Houston

Maggie Tallerman is Professor of Linguistics at Newcastle University. She has spent her professional life in North East England, having previously taught for 21 years at Durham University. Her research interests centre on the origins and evolution of syntax and morphology; modern Brythonic Celtic syntax and morphology; and language typology. Her publications include Understanding Syntax (Hodder/OUPUSA, 1998; 3rd edn. 2011); with Robert D. Borsley and David Willis, The Syntax of Welsh (CUP, 2007); and, as editor, Language Origins: Perspectives on Evolution (OUP, 2005). She is also the editor of the series Palgrave Modern Linguistics. She is the co-editor with Kathleen Gibson of the series, Oxford Studies in the Evolution of Language.

Kathleen Gibson is Professor Emerita, Neurobiology and Anatomy, University of Texas Houston. Her co-edited books include, with Sue T. Parker, Language' and Intelligence in Monkeys and Apes (CUP 1990); with Tim Ingold, Tools, Language, and Cognition in Human Evolution (CUP 1993); with Paul Mellars, Modelling the Early Human Mind (McDonald Archaeological Institute 1996); and, with Dean Falk, Evolutionary Anatomy of the Human Neocortex (CUP 2001). She is the co-editor with Maggie Tallerman of the series, Oxford Studies in the Evolution of Language.
