The author spent thousands of dollars getting started selling his work in a few venues. Unfortunately, most of that amount was wasted because at the time he didn't understand the business. Excellent advice and tips!!

Thank you for this book! I bought this in hard-copy last year and just came across it here on Amazon. I thought I'd write my thanks. I am an amateur photographer who has been shooting for a few years. I have come to simply love photography and about two years ago I started donating framed photographs to nonprofits for their silent auctions. They always sold well and I received great feedback, which inspired me to do more donations because it was so fun to see someone, or several "someones", bid on the art. So, recently I had a conversation with a friend who owns a very busy community coffee house. He invited me to show my photographs- a real exhibit! I was so excited, and a nervous wreck all at once. I talked to a portrait photographer colleague about the best ways to frame, etc. He sent me to a framer in town who he thought would be helpful. Long story short - I hated what the framer was trying to convince me to do. Just did not feel right, and it was really expensive. So, I sat down at my computer and Googled "how to frame photographs for exhibit" and your book came up. I immediately downloaded it and I must say it was the best $17.95 I have ever spent! Thank you for all the practical advice and links to resources. I had 16 photos to mat and frame, and your advice saved me lots of money and frustration. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!

My show was up for three months, and I sold 5 pieces. I had made arrangements to donate half of the net proceeds to a local charity, and so the coffee house waived their fees. They got nice publicity, the charity gets a little money, and I had the most wonderful experience of having my first photography show.

Quick, no nonsense info regarding the confusing business of making and selling art prints. Playing the guessing game of what works and what doesn't is no fun and costs lots of time and money.

Excellent Book

This book goes straight to the point, read it before my last exhibition and it truly made my process better. I gave it 4 stars only because I think it should get deeper in the framing/mating section.

About the Author

Professor Se-Kwon Kim, Ph.D., is a senior professor in the Department of Chemistry and is the director of the Marine Bioprocess Research Center (MBPRC) at Pukyong National University in the Republic of Korea. His major research interests include investigation and development of bioactive substances derived from marine organisms and their application in Oriental medicine, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals via marine bioprocessing and mass-production technologies. He is a board member of the International Society of Marine Biotechnology and the International Society for Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods. To date, he has authored more than 500 research papers, holds 110 patents, and has written or edited more than 40 books.

I appreciated almost all of what was offered, especially from a Christian perspective. However, I was getting tired of the man playing the chump in most of the anecdotes. Maybe that is how they all fell, but in the interest of a more level balance they could have swapped the genders occasionally without us being any the wiser.

This famous Italian chef, TV cooking star, cookbook author, and restaurateur tells her five grandchildren how Christmas was celebrated when she was a child. This lightly fictionalized personal remembrance becomes the framework for descriptions of how the whole family decorates the juniper bush with apples, tangerines, figs, bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, and wrapped walnuts and almonds. Recipes for 16 delicious-sounding traditional Italian goodies make up the second half of the book but are definitely for adults to make (the recipe for Fried Ribbon Cookies, for example, takes up two pages with its small type). The soft-toned illustrations feature Bastianich with her signature close-capped haircut and are cozy as all get-out. A Christmas reminiscence from the Italian-American cooking-show host. Her warmhearted autobiographical story begins in a contemporary Christmas setting with the author, her five grandchildren and her own mother. The author then gathers her grandchildren around to recount her memories of childhood Christmases in Italy, when all the decorations for their trees were homemade cookies and ornaments made from natural materials such as figs and bay leaves. The next section includes the recipes for the 16 holiday treats mentioned in the story, primarily different types of Christmas cookies. A final section describes the family’s traditions for decorating their tree in more detail. Logan’s pleasant illustrations of the happy family add to the amiable overall effect. The main story is accessible enough to children, but making the recipes will clearly�require an adult’s assistance. (author’s note) (Informational picture book. 5-8)�

A delightful feeling of Christmas past.

In some Christmas books, they are written as fairy tales, to entertain and keep young minds entranced, with characters and situations that make for happy endings. But with this particular new book, from the talented and creative mind of Lidia Bastianich, you have a true tale. A true tale of a harder life that some people had to live during more difficult times, but told in such an endearing way, that her message of love and family comes shining through.

This hardcover, 9"x11", 26 page tale of Christmas past, will enchant the little ones with how simple acts of love and the the true spirit of Christmas, brought joy to Lidia as a child. And now, as a grandmother herself, she brought the same happiness to her grandchildren. The pictures are large with generous use of soft, pastel-like colors, with words that even a little one could read.

It is a delightfully written story of how the Christmases in Lidia's childhood were celebrated; not with running around and buying and spending and stressing, as we tend to do in this present world, but in simpler more cherished time of understanding the essence of Christmas; in coming together as family and finding the simple stuffs around us to prepare for the birth of our Lord.

Joining together with artist Laura Logan, both pen and picture tell the story of how Lidia, her parents, her grandparents, and her brother, spent the Christmas season when she was a child, growing up during more sparse times. But times in which the simplicities of life were the most endearing. We join Lidia as she is recounting these stories to her own grandchildren, and the lesson and impact such closeness imparts to young children as the older generation passes on the memories of a era gone by and the joy that it brought to them.

Instead of the luxury of a big Christmas tree, she tells of a small juniper bush that held little blue berries on its branches, and was bedecked with homemade cookie wreaths and tangerines and pears and apples and figs and bay leaves and such, with ribbons to tie those special decorations. Candy was also placed on the bush but candy was quite a treat in those days, and whenever she and her brother would eat one of the candies, they would place small pebbles in the wrapper and place them back on the bush, so that no one would notice.

In telling this story to the children, they too wanted to have that same type of Christmas celebration, and in the earnestness that only children can evoke, carried out the same tradition through the same actions.

A gifted artist, Laura Logan has created darling caricatures of Lidia and her family, especially her grandchildren, and with color and imagination, brought the scenes to the pages of this book. As her grandchildren will someday cherish, this was a wonderful and touching way of being entwined in their grandmother's love and life.

At the end of the story, there is a grand caricatiure photo of the Bastianich family, including Lidia's mother, Erminia, along with Lidia's children, Tanya and her husband, and son Joseph and his wife, along with the grandchildren, gathered around the tree and fireplace, feeling once more the joy of her Christmas past.

Near the end, the book contains the recipes that make for a simple, yet memorable celebration such as Fruit Tea, Brutti Ma Buoni cookies, Fregolata (Cookie Crumbles), Crostoli (Fried Ribbon Cookies), Pignoli (Amaretii con Pignoli; these are delicious!), Biscotti ai Demi di Sesamo (Sesame Cookies), Crostata (Fruit Jam or Chocolate Tartlet Cookies), Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies, PB & J Cookies, Angel Food Cupcakes, Simple Sugar Cookies, Almond Apricot Butter Cookies, Almond Stuffed Figs, Chocolate Star Cookies, Royal Icing, and Palacinkes.

The last 2 pages of this wonderful book is called "Decorating the Tree" which was a short little essay of sorts desribing how the Christmas tree (or bush!) can be decorated by finding the right ribbons and fruits, and how to use them to bring that memory to life.

This reminded me very much of the books I read in my childhood, which made me want to read them over and over again because of how warm and happy they made me feel. It also reminds me of times shared with my own grandparents and the stories they told; those memories are priceless to me. Yes, I am very much in awe of what Lidia does, and the talent that she has, but one would be hardpressed to deny the delight that such a simple story can bring to the heart. Peace.

Delightful Christmas book. Lidia's authentic story is a wonderful book to share with children and grandchildren. The illustrations are beautifully done and seem
to truly capture the moment. The book was somewhat of a surprise in that I expected a more mature content, however this will be a new take on the traditional Christmas stories we share. I enjoyed Lidia's childhood memories and the beautiful Italian cookie recipes and tree decorations are splendid!

My 8-year-old granddaughter loves watching cooking shows on TV, and Lidia is her favorite. We saw a portion of this book on PBS so I had to purchase it for her for Christmas. She has read it over and over, and we are going to try some of the recipes included. Many opportunities for teaching her about customs from other countries, plus the recipes she can help with.

Microarrays Lite

It just doesn't have the detail I wanted.
There's a lot to like here. Stekel covers everything, starting with selecting the probes and printing the arrays. Next comes raw array analysis - scanning, image processing, and measuring the effects of the array itself on the results. That covers the first six chapters. The next three go over analysis of the result, one more chapter covers experimential design, and the last chapter discusses storing, labelling, and sharing the data. Some of those topics, like experiment design, address issues that most other authors neglect.
Still, I came away feeling that I had read only half of each chapter. Going back, it turned out that I hadn't missed anything that really was there. I missed a lot, though. For example, probe selection includes a discussion of self-hybridization - good stuff. It stopped short of giving me any clear idea how much self-complementarity is too much. It mentioned DNA melting points, but without enough information for me to understand what is really melting, or how or why to choose one melting point over another. Handling of raw array data discussed Loess regression as a way to cancel out process differences across a single array. Again, it's good stuff, but what exactly is a Loess regression? Expression analysis mentions Spearman correlation as an alternative to Pearson correlation - it give Pearson's formulas, but not Spearman's. Later, when the author does give a "formula" for selecting sample sizes, it turns out to be some macro reference for some stat package. Throughout the book, I felt the same lack: I learned the names of many things, but not what they really are.
Maybe this book is OK for a first introduction. If you've had that introduction and want to take the second steps, this book probably won't meet your needs.

A Good Book for Microarray Bioinformatics

I rate this book a 5 star because I believe this book is one of best bioinformatics books which make it possible for the biologists to understand the bioinformatic tools inside of microarray technology. For me the most useful chapters include Sequence Databases for Microarrays, Computer Design of Oligonucleotide Probes, Normalisation, Measuring and Quantifying Microarray Variability, Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes. As a three-years microarray user, I still get a lot information after I read this book. However, no any bioinformatic books are perfect and complete. There are also some limitations in this book. The author sometimes did not provide detailed information on some biostatistic analysis tools and only provided some references for reading. Since a lot of bioinformatic tools are still in the trial stage and need to be improved, we can not blame the author for the incompleteness.
As a 250-pages bioinformatics book, I believe, this book is very informative and useful for microarray users and biologists who are tired of understanding the abstract biostatistic equations.

Very good introduction to microarray bioinformatics

This is a very clearly written and easy to read introduction to microarray bioinformatics. It builds a basic basis of knowledge in a very short time, so it is a great start for beginners in the field. By the end of the book you also have a pretty clear sense of what you might want to read in more depth. It does not treat any of the subjects in great detail, but does have reading suggestions for each chapter, including books and original papers. Also, the bioinformatics concepts are explained in a very logical and easy to grasp manner, so the biologist or physician with no computational background will find it particularly useful.
