"HOW WE SPEND OUR DAYS IS OF COURSE HOW WE SPEND OUR LIVES" From The Writing Life by Annie Dillard —comes this poignant meditation and deep observation on creating a life well lived. It reminds us that simple is better than complicated and one good thing is worth more than many minor things. How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. Therefore, how do you want to spend your days? Above all else, what is the most important one thing for you to do with your life each day? What kind of life do you want to live? When you look back one day on your life, will you be able to say you lived the life you wanted? In 20/20 hindsight will you be able to say that you have no regrets? No matter your age, no matter your circumstances, you can create and live that kind of life now. We are never too young or too old to change. For most of my life until now I was a hard charging corporate executive. Today I am a simple living mentor and writer. How did I change? I survived a terminal illness. From that ordeal I learned what is important and what is trivial. I also learned that no matter our habits we can start again and create a new and amazing life. A life with focus. A life that blesses us and others as well. I wrote The One Thing 66 Day Workbook to help you create in 66 days the life you want to spend your precious days on.

Don't Waste your money like I did. All the questions are in the book and can make and print a word doc in one minute.
By Mike H
This workbook was such a wast of money. I even spent more to have it shipped faster and was greatly disappointed when I opened it up and read the 5 or 6 pages the author "wrote" giving a small synopsis of the book and constantly repeating himself of what he said before. The rest of the pages are just the exact same pages that have 5 questions that you could have made on your own literally in 1 minute. Maybe I was over expecting on what this workbook would be. The 5 questions are 1. What is my one thing?, 2.What will I do today to move forward, 3. Did I accomplish today's one thing? Yes or No, 4. If not what did I do instead?, 5. What took me off track? Same things in the book so don't wast your time and just make a word document for 66 days with those on there.

The Enchanter Heir (Heir Chronicles Book 4), by Cinda Williams Chima

They called it the Thorn Hill Massacre—the brutal attack on a once-thriving Weir community. Though Jonah Kinlock lived through it, he did not emerge unscathed: like the other survivors Jonah possesses unique magical gifts that set him apart from members of the mainline guilds. At seventeen, Jonah has become the deadliest assassin in Nightshade, a network that hunts the undead. Emma Claire Greenwood grew up worlds away, raised by a grandfather who taught her music rather than magic. An unschooled wild child, she runs the streets until the night she finds her grandfather dying, gripping a note warning Emma that she might be in danger. The clue he leaves behind leads Emma into Jonah's life—and a shared legacy of secrets and lingering questions. Was Thorn Hill really a peaceful commune? Or was it, as the Wizard Guild claims, a hotbed of underguild terrorists? The Wizards' suspicions grow when members of the mainline guilds start turning up dead. They blame Nightshade, bringing tensions between the groups to a head. Racing against time, Jonah and Emma work to uncover the truth about Thorn Hill, amid increasing concern that whoever planned the Thorn Hill Massacre might strike again.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—The fourth installment to Chima's "Heir Chronicles" centers around two teens, Jonah Kinlock and Emma Greenwood. Ten years earlier, a massacre killed off all adults, leaving just child survivors known as savants, who are mutants endowed with skills that, once brought under control, can be used in ways to contribute to the survival of the community. Many of the them, however, require heavy medication and rarely live to adulthood. Those that die turn into shades, zombielike creatures that retain the memories of their past life and inhabit dead bodies. Jonah is a talented musician, enchanter, and trained assassin. His skin is poisonous and he can kill from a simple touch; his job is to rid the world of shades. Emma is also a talented musician, but unlike Jonah, she is not aware of her special abilities. The teens are star-crossed lovers with overwhelming obstacles blocking their paths. As Emma's world slowly converges with Jonah's, both of their lives spin into a chaotic downward spiral. Scattered with musical references throughout, the book also tackles serious themes of disability and discrimination. The cliff-hanger ending will leave readers restless for more. For those in need of a quick refresher, the author provides a series guide on her website.—Sabrina Carnesi, Crittenden Middle School, Newport News, VA

From Booklist
Someone is killing wizards and framing Nightshade, the secret organization whose job it is to track down undead souls and dispatch them. Jonah, a 17-year-old assassin for Nightshade, is also on the trail of wizard killers, but for a different reason: he wants to know who was behind the Thorn Hill disaster, where thousands of adult sorcerers and nearly as many children died. Meanwhile, teen musical genius Emma, in search of her sorcerer father, lands directly in Jonah’s path. He is smitten, but can he save her from those who think she knows the secret to Thorn Hill? There is plenty of background information in the interstices of this multifaceted narrative, but readers new to the Heir Chronicles series may occasionally have difficulty connecting all the dots. Intriguing plot and subplot teasers abound, and the book ends in a cliff-hanger that will have readers roaring for the next entry. Chima continues to excel at building tension and populating her well-told tales with new and returning characters we want to know better. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: It’s a big series with a big following. Author tour, book trailer, and more promise to keep the swords a-swinging. Grades 8-11. --Cindy Welch

Chima returns to her best-selling contemporary fantasy series with an entry that is almost entirely setup-but such delicious setup. Ten years ago, something terrible happened at the magical commune of Thorn Hill, a refuge from vicious Weir infighting. Thousands died, leaving only a few hundred young children, horribly damaged and with mutated gifts. Jonah is one of those survivors, born a charismatic and empathetic enchanter but now cursed with a killing touch, which he reluctantly employs to hunt down the undead spawn of the massacre. Meanwhile, Emma scarcely remembers Thorn Hill and knows nothing of her sorcerous heritage, until her grandfather's murder sends her fleeing into the epicenter of Weir intrigue, prejudice, accusations and assassination. There are so many complicated storylines introduced here-characters old and new, factions with shifting allegiances and agendas, plots and counterplots and secrets and lies-that the protagonists don't even meet for over 100 pages, and the volume ends on grisly cliffhanger. Yet the twisty narrative works, propelled by the deft characterizations of tortured, frustrated, desperate Jonah and fierce, feral, determined Emma and held together by the ubiquitous soundtrack of the blues, both literally and metaphorically. Chima orchestrates a world gravid with smoke and grit and sudden death, throbbing with hopeless longings, messy affections, festering resentments, passionate hungers, inevitable betrayals, and miraculous flashes of beauty and grace. A smoldering story soaked in tears, sweat and blood, constantly threatening to blaze into an inferno. Spellbinding. (Fantasy, 14 & up) Kirkus"

When Jonah was seven, a mysterious mass poisoning swept through the Thorn Hill commune, leaving the adults dead and most of the children either dead or altered, their innate magical abilities mutated in unpredictable ways. Jonah himself, for instance, can kill with a soothing, bliss-filled touch. Gabriel Mandrake has formed a school for the survivors near Trinity, Ohio, where, as readers of the first three Heir Chronicles (The Warrior Heir, BCCB 7/06, etc.) will recall, the Weir Council has formed a shaky peace among the still suspicious and antagonistic guilds. Now, however, wizards are being killed, and Gabriel has assembled a group of young assassins to dispatch the undead spirits of Jonah's commune, who have also migrated to Ohio and are seeking bodies to possess. Jonah excels at this task, but he's having second thoughts about both Gabriel's motives and his tactics. While compulsively readable and full of features that make readers glom on to the paranormal romances, this entry has a good many gaps in the world-building that will leave even committed readers frustrated. New terminology regarding the guilds is introduced without explanation, the timeline doesn't clearly correlate to the other books', and the ending offers no intermediate closure. The romance is also problematic: Emma, a girl who somehow survived the Thorn Hill Massacre with no knowledge of the Weir world of which her parents were a part, placidly accepts the new information about her heritage without so much as a blink and inexplicably falls in love with Jonah while he is tying her up and setting out to interrogate her father. These flaws may not bother readers previously blinded by sparkly vampires, but as those readers are less likely to commit to series as complex as this one, expect some mild disappointment along with howling clamors for the next book. KC BCCB"

4Q5P An unexplained tragedy left no adult survivors from the thriving Thorn Hill community in Brazil and less than a thousand children to be rescued and brought back to the States. These children were not just left with emotional scars, they were changed at their most basic magical and physical levels. Calling themselves savants, the Thorn Hill children have become teens with serious magical complications that make them dangerous to ignore; Jonah Kinlock can kill with a single touch. Torn between his gentle heart and his magic, Jonah is starting to question what he believes about the status quo when Emma Greenwood appears. True, Emma's got her own secrets, but there are intriguing hints that she might be the key to understanding what happened in Thorn Hill. Can Jonah battle his hormones, keep his deadly secret, and still win Emma's trust before it is too late? Teens will be more than relieved when they can finally put their hands on this next, long-awaited entry in the Heir Chronicles series. Jonah and Emma, along with a collection of secondary characters, deal with half-truths and lies hidden in their own histories while finding unexpected connections that continue developing storylines from previous books in the series. The fighting and weaponry will have strong appeal for boys, while the musical references will appeal to any teen interested in crafting their own music, lyrics, or poetry. The surprise ending, with plenty of loose threads left hanging, will intrigue and frustrate fans who now must begin to wait all over again.-Stacey Hayman VOYA"

"The Enchanter Heir" - Title is misleading
By Karabee68
Spoilers (In case you haven't read the first 3, but if you're reading this then..?)

--

The Warrior heir title makes sense, because Jack is coming in to his role as the only one left besides Ellen, and the book makes the world spark major change that leads in to the next. Huge change, world changing. The Wizard Heir is about McCauly who is also the center of world changing events, and does them himself. The Dragon Heir is even more so, these three books keep major themes and the "heir" part make sense because they become basically the most centered of their weir and the most powerful.

...The Enchanter Heir.. Is basically a separate novel of those three, set in the same universe. In this book the main character does little to nothing, and it all seemed like a hasty back story with no real material. Thorn hill, cool.. The premise is leading us up to find out what really happened.. Wizard heir was paced well and we knew by the 3/4 and last of the book, this one still in the dark. We have a "hero" that kills people because of what happened there, but doesn't do much else besides play music and kill people. "Administrative roles" Let's add filler and hop around letting everyone know what he does until the end..

Sulking and just falling in love with a girl that's mysterious and obviously will be the center of everything. Nothing is solved, accidents happen but nothing happens to fix them.

There are so many things that were just opened and never closed, and just seems snaked in so we have to buy the next book. It follows the pacing of a trilogy with little action. I came to expect the Heir books to be a solid stand alone novel, and sure this one can stand alone, but solid? Nothing major happens, it's just a dragged out love story.

Meh.

Doesn't deserve the title of the book, should be more like

When I flipped the last page and found the acknowledgements
By Mary
I literally started swearing my head off. Which is not something I usually do; I generally resort to things like "Dagnabbit!" and other clean "curses" my friends make fun of me for. However, this was completely deserving of all the sailor mouth I spat at it. I mean, first off, for me to post a review about something is HUGE. Like for me to write a review, I have to be seriously dissatisfied with the product (or in this case the book), to actually muster up the energy to write a complaint. However, here I am writing a review at 1:10 AM because I am thoroughly outraged. Yes, I am an angst-ridden teen. Yes, I probably overreact on a daily basis. However, I love to read and am generally pretty satisfied with any book by Chima; so when I have to deal with a book that I had such high hopes for that ends up frustrating me so much that I want to start a public protest, you know there's a problem. I won't ruin anything for anybody, but I would suggest waiting for the next installment before reading this one so you won't have a typical, teenager angst attack at one in the morning (I am seriously wondering if you can go into shock from too many emotions regarding a fictional story with fictional characters). At first it didn't sound like it was written by her; towards the middle I started to feel like it was her writing. However, I felt like I was reading a fanfiction that had somehow won a contest that allowed it to be the first part of the Enchanter Heir book. And then on the other hand, it's just flat-out depressing. I mean it does get better, but then, of course, the COMPLETELY RANDOM, SOMEHOW-GOT-ACCEPTED-AS-THE-ENDING-EVEN-THOUGH-IT'S-THE-LEAST-PLAUSIBLE-THING-THAT-COULD-HAPPEN (like, there are WARRIORS there, people. You'd think they would be on high alert with all these mainliners chilling there that have been threatening them since Madison came in and was all awesome, but hey, what do I know, I'm just an adolescent teen that can't deal with the angst that teen books provide). Also, on a different note, the other three books were a bit more kid-friendly. I mean, hey, I totally feel for Emma and like her lusting after Jonah or whatever, but is every second in the book necessary? Really? I get it, he's hot, he's got rippling muscles, he's deep and tortured, he's the perfect fictional creation we all have contributed to as a fangirling community on Tumblr; great, whatever. But if you're going to get into THAT over Emma's family's past, or Jonah's dead family or even the Thorn Hill incident itself which is like the biggest unanswered question EVER, you need to sort out your priorities. Way too many different underlining plots, too few questions answered about Gabriel and Kenzie, and the vocabulary is so random. I'm going to be nit-picky here because I can, and this really bothered me, but why would you spell "dryly" as "drily", Chima? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE. Why do you continually point out Emma's curves and the fact that, yes, Jonah does have "washboard abs" at least 15 times? This, and many other questions may never be answered (like how many licks will it take the average person to eat a tootsie pop?). We will just have to wait, apparently. However it is definitely not her best work; this took me about two months to get through, and I can read a book this long in under a day usually. I am deeply disappointed. And I felt the need to get it out on the internet, because all of you clearly care about my teen angst. So anyway, be prepare for an astounding amount of depression for the first-what?-100 pages, and a completely unsatisfactory ending. My rant is now finished. Thank you for reading.

The Beginning of Something Bigger
By JPSkotnik
Since I read Dragon Heir when it first came out, it’s been awhile since I’ve been in this world. This means the beginning was a bit confusing for me. A glossary of terms and characters from the other books would have been helpful and made the beginning a less frustrating read. I think the benefit of having that break between the books was I didn’t go into this book with the expectations many other readers appear to have had.
Other than being in the same world, this book is very different from the other Heir books. Instead of being a “stand alone” novel, it’s the beginning of a bigger story arc. I’ve read series where each book is it’s own story but builds upon the world, and I’ve ready series/trilogies where it’s all one continuous story. Both can work, and I like both when they do.
I think this one worked. I never felt like my time was being wasted with filler. I enjoyed getting to know Jonah and Emma (whose true importance, I suspect, will be revealed in the next book), and having more time with the secondary characters made them easier to remember as individuals. There is a lot going on in this book – characters, events, organizations – and I’m looking forward to seeing how they come together in the next book. If Chima had tried to put everything in this one book, it would have been too rushed and unbelievable.

Easily the best
By Rotunda
Ignore what your classmates, kaplan, PASS and the professor say - skip the terribly mediocre and incomprehensible Guyton and Berne and Levy and pick Germann up. This is EASILY the best physio book out there. The software package alone will get you through the toughest of concepts. This is one of the best-written textbooks on any subject out there and it makes learning about the human body, with its fantastic images and awesome explanations, fun and memorable.

Wanna understand human body functions?
By Domilie S. E. Nielsen
Great book to read for better understanding of human body functions. There are good and colorful illustrations in it. Through the guided illustrations and simplified physiological explanations, it makes easier to connect the function of one part of the body to the other.
Well I made good grade on my exam in anatomy and physiology anyhow ... so I can say that this book helped me a lot.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9 - These books start out with good introductions to primary sources and offer suggestions about how to interpret them. Next, the authors provide overviews of their topics. Detailed tables of contents allow readers to locate specific documents. The primary sources include newspaper articles, excerpts of famous speeches, government documents, letters, and song lyrics. Each entry is prefaced with historical background and followed by "Think about This" questions. While the questions tend to give the titles a textbook feel, they will make readers pause for a moment and contemplate what they have just read. Colorful reproductions (paintings, posters, political cartoons, etc.) and period photos are sprinkled throughout, adding greatly to the texts. For example, a diary excerpt from a 14-year-old hobo in Great Depression is accompanied by a black-and-white photo of two vagrants walking along train tracks. Each volume ends with an illustrated time line; a helpful index; and a bibliographic section that includes books for further reading, Web sites, and videos. These excellent resources stand out from other titles on these frequently assigned subjects because they deal strictly with primary sources, contain top-notch illustrations, and enable students to grasp the concepts without being overwhelmed. - Marianne Fitzgerald, Severna Park High School, MD

Mappings, by Susan Stanford Friedman

In this powerful work, Susan Friedman moves feminist theory out of paralyzing debates about us and them, white and other, first and third world, and victimizers and victims. Throughout, Friedman adapts current cultural theory from global and transnational studies, anthropology, and geography to challenge modes of thought that exaggerate the boundaries of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, and national origin. The author promotes a transnational and heterogeneous feminism, which, she maintains, can replace the proliferation of feminisms based on difference. She argues for a feminist geopolitical literacy that goes beyond fundamentalist identity politics and absolutist poststructuralist theory, and she continually focuses the reader's attention on those locations where differences are negotiated and transformed.

Pervading the book is a concern with narrative: the way stories and cultural narratives serve as a primary mode of thinking about the politically explosive question of identity. Drawing freely on modernist novels, contemporary film, popular fiction, poetry, and mass media, the work features narratives of such writers and filmmakers as Gish Jen, Julie Dash, June Jordon, James Joyce, Gloria Anzald%a, Neil Jordon, Virginia Woolf, Mira Nair, Zora Neale Hurston, E. M. Forster, and Irena Klepfisz.

Defending the pioneering role of academic feminists in the knowledge revolution, this work draws on a wide variety of twentieth-century cultural expressions to address theoretical issues in postmodern feminism.

Review
Winner of the 1999 Barbara Perkins and Geroge Perkins Award, Society for the Study of Narrative Literature

One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1999

From the Back Cover

"[Mappings] proposes a thoroughly multiculturalist and geopolitical definition of feminism that significantly expands the theoretical boundaries of feminist theory and that underlines the importance of narrative as a meaning-making process.... Friedman casts a wide net, one whose timeliness, thoughtfulness, and engagement should prove inspiring and worthwhile for a large number of readers."--Joseph A. Boone, University of Southern California

"Here is a work by a critic-theorist who is already a major voice in the fields of feminist, cultural, and narrative theories. This volume is a rich and thought-provoking contribution to all three areas.... Unlike many other books on the same topics, it will appeal to the general reader, as well as to the specialist. Friedman is never pedantic, but her point of view comes through strong and clear. Her engagingly lucid writing style will certainly make her readable in more than one context."--R. Radhakrishnan, University of Massachusetts

About the Author
Susan Stanford Friedman is Virginia Woolf Professor of English and Women's Studies and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin--Madison.

cutting edge worldview including a literary study
By Laurie Winslow
Friedman has seen the post-modern future. This book ostensibly addresses feminists, but it spends so little time actually addressing this point of view that it self-demonstrates the more inclusive, globalistic, humanistic that it posits. I particularly appreciated the combining of literary review with this new global social theory of identity formation. My only criticism would be that the highly specialized jargon Friedman uses can at first seem obstructive. Overall, invaluable.

OK, but Gentry himself has a much better tutorial/intro to the topic than this booklet
By RKL
I wanted an intro, but the writing quality is somewhat low. Gentry has a tutorial paper "Computing Arbitrary Functions of Encrypted Data" that is on IBM's site and his MacArthur fellows profile page. It's free and is much better written and easier to consume. It's true that this booklet covers a few more topics, like a secure voting scheme -- but the writing quality is not high enough to recommend it.

On the other hand, it's a more easily consumable presentation than the original papers... so if not for the fact that there are better tutorials out there, this booklet would come in handy.

La Dame aux Camelias (In Contemporary American English), by Alexandre Dumas Fils

The novel begins with the narrator focusing on an apartment sale in Paris, in which he innocently buys a famous book: Manon Lescaut, after he reads a curious inscription by Armand Duval. This not so innocent book links the tale’s lover to the actual person who will eventually tell the story.

Part of the allure of the novel lies in its description of minute details about the life of the notorious courtesan Marguerite Gautier: parties, theater life, lovers’ arrangements, life on the speed lane—all in graphic detail, to include not only the violent expectorations of the consumptive courtesan, but also the exhumation of her decayed body.

Dazzled by the heroine’s beauty, Armando Duval blindly falls in love with the ailing Marguerite, who perhaps foreseeing a short life loosely spends her patron’s fortunes with reckless abandon. As the most beautiful kept woman of her time in Paris, she has no shortage of rich lovers who compete to foot the bills for her extravagant life style.

Yet Armand, a young man from the provinces, with meager income, convinces her of his love, succeeding in making Marguerite his lover. An idyllic period ensues away from Paris, in the French country side, where the couple conquers a temporary happiness.

Temporary indeed, for that presages a most tragic end, an end which rather than a moral lesson the novel opens unanswerable questions as to innocence and guilt, family and society, givers versus takers, good versus evil—life and death.

Although the intrigues, overall plot, and denouement may be easy to guess, the narrating voices hold the story in complete suspense to the bitter end. The acts of both, helpers and principals, advance relentlessly as told by four different narrators: an unnamed voice (presumably the author’s), Armand Duval, Marguerite Gautier, and Juliet Duprat (a friend).

La Dame aux camellias is a timeless story that will continue to captivate readers for many generations to come.

Really good book.
By Megan Mullins
This is such a good book. I love it and would read it again and again. It is about the most famous French courtesan of the 1800's falling in love with a man who cannot afford her and the relationship between the two. He gets jealous, she has to work, she feels guilty for ruining him and makes him leave her. She dies of tuberculosis, the most romantic disease of the time. It's a beautiful romantic story. Definitely recommend.

5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book!!! I want more Bowens!
By Angela S Goodrich
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I love all of the Bowen brothers and their ladies, but Christy and Cole’s story is my favorite among them. As a plus-sized gal myself, I felt an almost immediate connection to Christy the first time I read Heavy Issues. Needless to say, when I found out that their story was going to continue in Heavy Secrets I was beside myself with glee and that increased exponentially when I was offered the chance to read it early! And it was AWESOME!!!

It’s been a while since I last read Heavy Issues, so I don’t remember if Christy’s mother Martha was introduced before and I merely blocked her horrid character from my mind or not, but I was ready to crawl inside my Kindle and throttle that woman…multiple times. Good grief! With a mother like that, who needs enemies? But her presence helped to highlight the love that Cole had for Christy as evidenced by the fact that he didn’t confront Martha at Christy’s request. And when Christy finally reached her breaking point with her mother, the love that she had for Cole was even more apparent. But there was far more to the story than dealing with Martha and her constant attacks on Christy’s self-esteem as Cole found himself confronted with his past and the havoc his mother’s desertion and death wreaked on him emotionally. But you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens because that’s one spoiler I won’t reveal.

Heavy Secrets provided the same reading experience as every book in the Bowen series has for me – the opportunity to hang out with great friends. I laughed…A LOT. I teared up a few times. I cheered Christy on when she confronted Cole. I cheered her on even more when she dealt with her mother. I felt Cole’s pain. I squirmed while reading the freaking hot sex scenes. And my jaw dropped at the unexpected revelation at the end of the book. Oh! My!! GOD!!! Ms. Aycart I cannot wait to see where you take the series now.

5 - "Were we chipping in for a bodyguard?" Stars!
By Miss Claire L. Robinson
5 - "Were we chipping in for a bodyguard?" Stars!

Elle Aycart is an author whose work I never tire of. The Bowen brothers and the series of books that Elle has built around them are some of my all-time favourite reads. Why? Because although they are essentially romance/erotica at its best, she always manages to add just a little something to each one to make them completely different from anything else you are currently reading. James, Cole & now Max have all found and are happily settled with their women. One married, one engaged and one well on the way. Heavy Secrets gives us a chance to catch up with the dark, dirty and dominant Cole, and bubbly, curvy, and geeky Christy.

”I love you… but but* the flock out.”

This is a quick, completely entertaining and extremely funny read. Cole and his brothers have such a way of interacting with each other that you can’t help but giggle at their antics.

”You’re a Valentines Day virgil, aren’t you?”

Cole’s inner monologue and dry sense of humor as well as acceptance of Christy’s geek hobbies had me laughing away at points as well, but there is a deeper and more emotional aspect to this novella in relation to both of them dealing with the darker parts of their pasts.

”You are not fat. I won’t stray. And you do not need to get knocked up to keep me.”

If you have read the previous books you know that Christy’s weight and food addiction issues have played a massive part in making her the strong character she now is, adding her one weak link back into the chain for this novella, Elle gives the reader a glimpse of the mother from hell, and just how manipulative a woman she really is.

It makes this novella all the more poignant for me, having dealt with a lot of Christy’s issues myself it was good to see her stand up for herself, and not fall back into the old habits she had left behind. But on the flip we also see Christy call Cole out on his s***, when issues from his past are unexpectedly bought back to the fore, forcing him to address parts of his past or try and rebuild those walls that being with Christy had bought down in the first place.

God how I love this pair, I love the Bowen Family in general, and this little catch-up offers plenty of entertainment and surprises to make it a worthwhile and enjoyable and sexy addition to the series.

ARC generously provided by the author, it was as it always is, my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.

I fancied something a little bit sexy, a little bit sweet, with a hero that was willing to sweep me off my feet.
By Under The Covers Book Blog
Reviewed by Suzanne and posted at Under The Covers Book Blog

After six months together Cole and Christy’s relationship has just grown stronger. That is, until Christy’s mum comes to stay, bringing back to life Christy’s old insecurities, driving Cole insane. But, an unexpected call brings back past hurts for Cole, driving him back to his old way of distancing himself from those he loves, mainly Christy.

Do you know when you manage, through fluke or excellent planning, to read the perfect book for your mood? Well, that was exactly what happened with Heavy Secrets, I fancied something a little bit sexy, a little bit sweet, with a hero that was willing to sweep me off my feet. Well. Heavy Secrets delivered me just that.

I really enjoyed Heavy Issues, the book that shows you Cole and Christy getting together, so I was looking forward to checking up on them in this novella. It is kind of essential that you read Heavy Issues before this, I definitely wouldn’t have liked it as much if I didn’t know Cole and Christy’s background. Although I haven’t read any of the other books in the Bowen series; an oversight I mean to correct!

If you like your heroes all alpha and bossy, with a dirty dirty mouth than Cole is the man for you. He was certainly the man for me; he knows how to get gal all hot and bothered. Of course, he only has eyes for Christy, the only woman who has managed to take him on an get past his defences.

A great quick read and like a pint of Ben & Jerry’s I managed to get through it all in one sitting and unlike a Ben & Jerry’s there was no guilt at the end when you realise you have just taken the last spoonful; however, it was just as moreish.

Although it has been only three years since writing the third edition of Entomology and Pest Management, much has occurred. Events have changed the face of pest technology and policy, causing us to take pause and reflect on our achievements and ponder our future. These recent events make the updating of this book a useful endeavor.

The most striking event since the third edition is our ubiquitous use of computers for gathering information. The Internet and World Wide Web have virtually taken over our activities, with nearly all students and specialists using them as a base of operations for information exchange. We now have rapid and mostly low-cost access to almost everything we want to know, right from our desk or laptop computer. Just do a search, and literally dozens of sites pop up on the screen, displaying everything from how-tos to why-nots. Moreover, students can enroll in and take courses through the Internet not only at their home university but at other universities as well. Arguably, many educators believe so-called distance education through computer delivery is the sine qua non of effective learning and the wave of the future.

To make use of this valuable information-gathering tool, the fourth edition of Entomology and Pest Management has "Favorite Web Sites" listed at the end of each chapter. The Web sites relate to the subject matter of the chapter and are presented as URLs, which are annotated. The reader may use these and their links to other sites to update basic information found in a particular book chapter. Additionally, Appendix 4 was developed, which presents one of the most comprehensive compilations of Web sites for entomology resources found anywhere. This list can be used for customized searches of entomological information on nearly any topic.

Other events that called for an updating of the third edition include impacts on pesticide use mandated by the EPA and the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. This agency and law have resulted in the disappearance of some of our most widely used insecticides and their substitution by new, sometimes safer and environmentally friendly chemicals and tactics. To reflect these events, Chapter 11 on conventional insecticides has been reorganized and completely updated, as has Appendix 3, which presents lists of commonly used insecticides. Moreover, current developments of low-risk tactics, such as microbial pesticides, insect growth regulators, and pheromones, are presented in Chapters 9 and 13.

Profound changes have also occurred in the past three years because of biotechnology. Transgenic plants that offer high degrees of resistance to insect pests have been engineered and become widely adopted in several cropping systems. Along with this development, concerns continue about insects overcoming the resistance and about the environmental and personal safety of these crops. Chapter 12 updates the reader on the status of transgenic plants developed for pest management and presents a new discussion on benefits and risks of cropping these.

There has also been substantial progress in the areawide approach to pest technology. This approach has been spotlighted nationally as a means of dealing with key insect pests, such as the boll weevil in southeastern cotton. The status of such areawide programs has been updated in Chapter 15, as has that of other pest management programs mentioned throughout the book.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Entomology and Pest Management can be used as an introduction to applied entomology for undergraduates or beginning graduate students. For undergraduates with only an elementary biology background, early chapters need emphasis to provide a basis for understanding the remaining content on insect ecology, surveillance, and management. Students with at least one course in entomology may wish to omit early chapters and emphasize the strategy and tactics of management found in later chapters. Omitting Chapters 1 through 4 for graduate courses or Chapter 14 for undergraduate courses will not result in a loss of continuity.

Content and Organization

The book consists of seventeen chapters, four appendices, and a glossary. Concepts and principles are emphasized and supported by factual detail and specific examples. Beginning chapters (1 through 3) concentrate on general entomology for the novice. Chapters 4 and 5 synthesize the elements of insect biology and ecology required for understanding insect pest management. Chapter 6 covers techniques and principles of sampling for problem assessment, and Chapter 7 builds on this knowledge by outlining types of reactions of crops to insect densities. Chapter 7 also features the concept of adding environmental costs in the decision-making process for management. The ideas and history of insect pest technology are reviewed, and the concept and philosophy of modern pest management is introduced in Chapter 8.

With this basic information presented in the first eight chapters, the student is introduced, chapter by chapter, to the individual tactics used as elements in pest management programs. The order of tactics presented is based on their relative importance in existing pest management programs. Consequently, natural enemies and ecological management of the environment, primarily preventive tactics, are mentioned first, followed by conventional insecticides, the premier element in curative tactics. The remaining tactics discussed in Chapters 12 through 14 are more specialized but, nevertheless, convey some of the newest and most innovative ideas in the science. These chapters have been updated and expanded in the fourth edition.

Chapter 15 discusses the ways pest management and pest technology are practiced. This chapter draws the analogy between human medicine and pest management, and it emphasizes the idea of prevention and therapy in combining several management tactics. Additionally, the chapter discusses areawide pest technology and recent successes with the cotton boll weevil in the United States.

Chapter 16 is unique among entomology texts because it integrates the problems of resistance, resurgence, and replacement and recent phenomena, such as enhanced microbial degradation of insecticides, into a single concept—ecological backlash. The chapter suggests to students that applying the tactics discussed does not always result in sustainable pest management, and it recommends ways of reducing or avoiding such problems.

The book ends by presenting examples of successful insect pest management programs in the context of diverse commodities.

Special Features

Basic and applied entomology. The primary purpose of the book is to promote an understanding of major elements of general entomology and relate them to modern principles of. insect pest management. Both theory and practice are emphasized in a conceptual approach to the topics, and numerous examples are presented to facilitate learning.

Ecological approach. Pest management topics are discussed as aspects of applied ecology, and solutions to pest problems are presented with regard to environmental quality, profitability, and durability.

Insect diagnostic boxes. About 60 insect diagnostic boxes are presented throughout the text. Each box contains detailed information on distribution, importance, appearance, and life cycle of a species or species group. Insects chosen are from examples mentioned in the text. Grouping specific data in boxes keeps the text from being overburdened with background information about a species when examples and case histories are given. Students not familiar with the species being discussed can consult the boxes to better understand and appreciate the examples in the text. Information in the boxes is referenced in the index. Additional information about major pests is given in Chapter 3 as insect families of major economic importance were included in presenting information on insect classification.

Boldface type. This feature allows the student to recognize new terms and important comments quickly and serves as a basis for topic review.

Appendices. Four appendices facilitate learning and serve as reference material. Appendix 1 presents a key to the orders of insects, allowing identification of both adult and immature insects. Appendix 2 contains a list of insect common names, scientific names, and classifications. Appendix 3 presents lists of common insecticides by common and trade names and gives manufacturer and toxicity information; this appendix was extensively revised and updated in the fourth edition. Appendix 4 is a comprehensive list of World Wide Web sites of Entomological Resources that can be used for customized computer searches of information.

Glossary. A glossary for quick reference appears at the end of the book and was expanded in the fourth edition. Words in the text that appear in bold type and others are included.

Favorite Web sites. The Web sites accessible through the Internet are presented as URL addresses along with a short description of the site's content. Readers can receive updates on the topic of a chapter by consulting these sites and navigating links to other, related sites for additional information.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

First and foremost, I owe many thanks to my current graduate students, Rayda Krell and Wilmar Morjan, in completing this revision. These students made important suggestions and contributions, which I have attempted to add to this edition. In addition to the demands of their own class work and dissertation research, they helped immeasurably with the daily operation of our research project, freeing my time for this task. Also, I thank my colleagues at Iowa State University for helping update my knowledge on various topics. Good Introduction to Entomology
By Matt Grieshop
Dr. Pedigo's book is one of the better general entomology/ pest management textbooks that I have read. It is written in an understandable format and provides a good introduction to the structure, function, taxonomy, and applied ecology of insects. This volume is most appropriate for the undergraduate student interested in entomology although it would also be a handy addition to a graduate student's library as well. As with many introductory entomology textbooks, the taxonomic keys are very limited. I would recommend Borror, Triplehorn, and Johnson's: An introduction to the study of insects to anyone who desires a book with a good set of taxonomic keys.
