Romance, not taboo babysitter

When the writer has a character say something out loud and then the main character tells you the same thing in their head to make sure you get it, it's not fun reading. It's best when a character describes details to another character painting a vivid picture. It's subtle and easy flowing. The book cover photo and the book title do not coincide with the story -they don't belong. This story isn't taboo naughty like both lead you to believe. It's a romance of a college babysitter in love with her friends father. Why pick a naughty cover photo for that? Listing babysitter in the title leads you to believe the taboo aspect. Which it is not. The "babysitter" is an adult, bonds closely with the family so much so that it's not a big deal for the two to end up together. I was board reading so much of the story that my brain kept skipping parts.

Emotional and Passionate

The synopsis alone caught my attention because of the unique story. I went on reading and became engaged to Amber’s character. The way the story was written was very magnificent. It is both emotional and passionate. I love the way the author manipulates words that can touch my heart and became sympathetic to Amber’s situation. All in all, this story is superb! I will definitely read the next volume.

Very interesting

It's good to know many aspects that we don't see in the filme. It gives an idea how all works, how many importante things happen until the final result. I liked the interviews to the actors - specially Tom Wlaschiha - and the relationship between the characters. Also to understand how is so important to this small films the financial aspect and how it's possible to make a good film with little money. I liked the way Carl Wilkinson moved and talked with so many diferente people without beeing stoped. Personaly i like this kind of books, because as i said, it gives the possibility to know what is behind the film.

On Thermonuclear War was controversial when originally published and remains so today. It is iconoclastic, crosses disciplinary boundaries, and finally it is calm and compellingly reasonable. As a result, both sides were better able to avoid disaster during the Cold War.

Kahn's stated purpose in writing this book was simply: "avoiding disaster and buying time, without specifying the use of this time." By the late 1950s, with both sides H-bomb-armed, reason and time were in short supply.

Kahn, a military analyst at Rand since 1948, understood that a defense based only on thermonuclear arnaments was inconceivable, morally questionable, and not credible.The book was the first to make sense of nuclear weapons. Originally created from a series of lectures, it provides insight into how policymakers consider such issues. One may agree with Kahn or disagree with him on specific issues, but he clearly defined the terrain of the argument. He also looks at other weapons of mass destruction such as biological and chemical, and the history of their use.

The Cold War is over, but the nuclear genie is out of the bottle, and the lessons and principles developed in On Thermonuclear War apply as much to today's China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea as they did to the Soviets.

About the Author

Herman Kahn (1922-1983) was a renowned political scientist, economist, historian geo-strategist, and considered by many to be the founder of futurology as a serious field of study. Associated for many years with the RAND Corporation, he was the founding director of the first independent “think tank,” the Hudson Institute. Among his many books are Thinking About the Unthinkable, The Year 2000, The Next 200 Years, The Coming Boom, The Resourceful Earth, and On Thermonuclear War.

Evan Jones is Herman Kahn's nephew. He is an historical analyst and game designer specializing in strategic simulations. He worked at the Hudson Institute in the mid-70s, primarily doing research used in The Next 200 Years.

What's found in here is an excellent example of nuclear war thinking from the past. It uses the premise that each country that has nuclear weapons actually wants to avoid using them because they value human life. This no longer applies today. When you have countries that believe if they die they get a bunch of virgins to make love to from their "god", all bets are off.

Short but a developed storyline and characters. Definitely hope Carr continues writing more in the Virgin River series they are always a satisfying sweet read. If you read them out of order go back once you buy the series and read them in order . You will realize you missed something even when you really enjoyed the books. Keep writing Ms. Carr!

Textbook in PS145A UC Berkeley

I had to buy this book because it's the required textbook for the course Political Science 145A: South Asian Politics led by Professor Chhibber in UC Berkeley. Usually Professor Chhibber gives interesting materials to read for his classes but I don't know why he chose this book as the required textbook. It's ..... completely.. horrible. I read four chapters so far, all written by different scholars, interestingly ALL of them are utterly hard to understand. It might be because of the lot of new information but even so, structurally.... it's so messed up. I wouldn't have cared if it wasn't a textbook but textbooks are supposed to be easy to understand. I really need a clear and precisely written textbook... This does not help me at all.

Great for Dan and Phil Phans

Daughter is a huge Dan and Phil fan and was, of course, very excited to get it and happy with the book and its content. However, we were at Target yesterday afternoon and it was already on the shelves the day before it was supposed to go on sale. It makes me hesitant to preorder a book again from Amazon if I can get it in stores a day early.

Worth it for Christmas Carol History enthusiasts

Printing could have been better, but that's the risk of these reprints, they are only as good as the scan. That said I was great to be able to get one of the earliest printed sources for the 12 Days of Christmas. I was delighted to find the book included some games as well.
