A real review from a real cook who really tried some recipes!

I just bought my first-ever rice cooker (a very nice Zojirushi model). Since some of the reviews of this cookbook have been negative and completely without reasonable basis (giving it one star because so many others gave it five stars--what is the logic to that?!?!), I decided to wait to review it until I had time to study the informative portions of the book and could try a few recipes.

My first three efforts included a risotto, a pilaf and a polenta. First, Lemony Risotto with Shrimp, pictured on the front of the book. I figured if it made the cover, it had to be good, and it was! Just the right hint of lemon along with a delicious, creamy risotto and perfectly cooked shrimp, all without the constant stirring usually required when making risotto. Next was Orange Pistachio Pilaf, made with plain old white rice. An easy and delicious side dish! Last was Polenta Primavera, a little more work, but a wonderful vegetarian entr�e.

Pros: The beginning pages of this book are worth the price alone. The author starts with a discussion of rice cookers in general. There follow pages of descriptions of various rices (I had no idea there were so many different kinds of rice!), grains, and legumes that can be cooked in your rice cooker. Along the way, she educates about the proper way to prepare these foods. For example, she states that all rices should be rinsed before cooking, except Arborio and Carnaroli, and she explains why.

The index is very detailed and accurate. There are 2 small sections with color photographs tucked inside the book. There are recipes for breakfasts, desserts, and everything in between. Some of the recipes require a large-capacity rice cooker, and some require a unit that features fuzzy-logic. But most can be made in a medium size unit, even one that just has an on-off setting.

Con: My only disappointment is that there are a number recipes where the only use of the rice cooker is to cook plain rice, and then use it with the recipe--such as a stir fry, cooked in a wok, and served over steamed rice. To me, that isn't a rice cooker recipe. But they look so good, I still give this cookbook five stars!

Excellent variety but has far too many non-rice cooker recipes and lacks some important details

I recently got on the rice cooker bandwagon having bought an expensive fuzzy-logic machine, so I'm well aware of the wide variety of foods that a rice cooker can make, especially the fuzzy-logic kind. So I was expecting a book purporting to have 300 recipes for rice cookers to expand my horizons on what I can do with my machine. I was impressed by the variety and different flavors of cuisine represented in the book (Japanese, Thai, Italian, Indian, Southern American, Mexican, etc.) and by the styles of dishes (the book is sectioned into: breakfasts; appetizers, snacks, and sushi; salads; soups; stews and chilis; main dishes and one-pot meals; risottos and pilafs; side dishes; steam cuisine; desserts). As one would expect, there are a plethora of very interesting and creativity-inspiring dishes involving various rice and grains and rice cookers which made the book worth a buy for me.

However, I am perplexed at what some of the recipes have to do with rice cookers, especially since in the "How to Use This Book" section the author says "All of the recipes in this book can be made using an electronic rice cooker." Well, that's stretching the truth to say the least. Many recipes just take something that you are to previously have made presumably in the rice cooker, like cooked rice or chickpeas or lentils, and then are just a regular non-rice cooker recipe sometimes requiring various other equipment like skillets, food processors, ovens, broiling pan, etc. For example, recipes like quiche, pancakes, pate, bean dip, garlic steak...none of which have anything to do with a ricecooker. I think these recipes should be in their own section as horizon-expanding supplements since they are not made in a rice cooker and are just things you can do with rice and grains basically, and they shouldn't be part of the misleading 300 in the title!

Strangely, the top of the recipes are supposed to list in bold the equipment and/or type of rice cooker needed for the recipe (some require a fuzzy logic only), but some of the recipes are missing this information making quick browsing difficult. Last, the book's intro was very no-frills, and the design of the book is extremely basic and boring with only a few inserts of sumptuous color pictures.

So I give the book three stars because while it has a nice variety of recipes and basic rice cooker explanations and is a great addition for any rice cooker owner, it's frustrating to not be able to make many of the recipes because I don't have the equipment which I didn't think I'd need given the title of the book, although there are PLENTY for me to still try with my rice cooker. There are very few cookbooks out there on cooking with rice cookers, so this one is absolutely worth a buy along with "The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook" (which is much richer in detail, background, and interesting tips and gives more nuanced instructions for the advantages of on/off machines vs. fuzzy logics).

FYI- NOT for small rice cookers

Just want to warn those who have a small rice cooker, don't get excited.
This book is for medium rice cookers 14-16 cups, or large 19-22 cups.
And if its an on/off cheap model there aren't that many recipes for it either.

This book is a little deceiving....
The recipes don't always use the rice cooker exclusively.
It makes you cook a meal on the stovetop separately and then you add the rice from the rice cooker.
To me, that doesn't sound like a rice cooker recipe book.
I was expecting recipes that you could do by putting everything in the rice cooker.

The recipes look good, but I wish it would use the rice cooker as the main method of cooking.

Database Systems Textbook

I was required to buy this book for an introductory class to databases. My classes were entirely online, and the textbook was generally the only source of information given (ex, no lectures or instructor's notes). I have no experience with databases at all, and was looking forward to learning about them.

This book is broken into very logical parts, and has a nice amount of "chunking" of information, with call-outs and plenty of diagrams. Props to the graphic designer. It covers a lot of material and tries to give as solid base of understanding for future database developers. It also includes a glossary in the back.

The text in the book left something to be desired. New terms would be defined using other new terms, forcing the reader to figure out 2 new terms at once. The book also would start to explain a concept, and then say that it was going to explain the concept further in later chapters over and over. I think the writers are very knowledgeable about what they are talking about, but would have done well to have a great technical writer help them convey that knowledge. Personally, I had to reread sections over and over trying to figure out exactly what the author meant. Eventually, I ended up going and looking up terms on Wikipedia to get a second explanation.

Overall, I think this book might be good if you have lectures or other resources in a class to help you understand databases. But on its own, this book has trouble getting all of its messages across clearly.

A great study book

This was a required textbook for a graduate course I took. I have no prior experience with any database system and relied on this book for my class and learned database design and SQL very well. The book is well structured and easy to read for the technically inclined. Don't expect to become a DBA after reading this book. I do recommend it though if you are trying to pursue a career in the database field. It will definitely help you to build the foundation and master the essentials. If you need more in depth coverage of SQL I would pickup another book as a supplement. This book doesn't focus on a specific flavor of SQL (Oracle, MySQL, or MS SQL Server) but rather explains SQL concepts using the standard ANSI SQL syntax and sometimes use additional Oracle or MS SQL Server examples to explain differences.

To those who met them casually, American women seemed a favored species. Again and again European travelers commented on the elevated status of the ladies they encountered in their voyages in the United States. Held in respect, relieved of contact with brutal necessities, allowed to expand their minds, independent guardians of the culture—these were the conventional descriptions. True, a surprisingly large percentage of them labored for a livelihood, and female wage earners were no better off than their male counterparts. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the number who worked at home or in factories steadily increased. But women of the middle classes were the pampered darlings of the society—elevated on pedestals away from the cares of the workaday world and guarded against all unpleasantness. One of them was Eleanor Roosevelt, daughter of a well-to-do family, bearer of a distinguished name, favored by fortune in every respect.

A First Rate Biography of a Famous First Lady

William Youngs is an elegant writer. He combines a deep understanding of American history with a personal touch and flare that is rare in published biographies. Eleanor Roosevelt: A Personal and Public Life is the best biography of Eleanor Roosevelt available. Youngs skillfully creates a narrative that while filled with historical facts, reads like a novel. The characters absolutely come alive.

If you are in the market for an incredibly readable and interesting take on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Eleanor Roosevelt: A Private and Public Life

I was given this book as a gift and I can say that I greatly enjoyed it! The prologue of the book was fascinating; for someone who was not familiar with the public's perception of Eleanor during WW2 it painted a picture of her as being almost hero-worshipped. I was also drawn in by Youngs' descriptions of her tending to wounded American troops. I admit I had preconcieved notions about the roots of Eleanor, assuming that she came from a life of leisure and priviledge. I had no idea about the trials she faced as a result of the deaths of both of her parents and her brother. I greatly enjoyed the chapters that give details on Eleanor's life prior to becoming First Lady, including her time at Allenswood school and its feminist influence on her life, her work with the WTUL, and when she made public appearances on behalf of her husband after the onset of his polio. When reading Young's work on ER I feel transported into the stories; her frustrations about FDR's illness, her grief when she discovers his affair, her passion for the promotion of women and minorities and most of all her positive, productive outlook on life regardless of the situations she was placed in make Eleanor a friend to the reader, you feel like you know her personally. Youngs' statement calling Eleanor,"...virtually an American saint..." is not far off base and it shows not only the author's deep admiration of his subject but also how she was viewed by the American constituency in this time.

As for those whose reviews say the book lacks depth regarding her contributions as a First Lady, what nonsense. The author clearly describes, in two lengthy chapters, the ways in which she asserted herself politically and personally. The books covers her disagreements with FDR's policies which she made publically, her work amongst women recruiting them to the Democractic party and how she fought against the stereotype of a First Lady being nothing more than a "face" and hostess for the White House. She was the first spouse to speak at a national political convention, she wrote for a paper and was a paid lecturer in a time when women were very limited by social constraints. The book also carefully chronicles Eleanor's life after FDR's death. When most women would have faded into the historical background Eleanor stayed active politically serving on a panel under the Kennedy administration and working closely with the United Nations. Youngs' writing in this chapter entitled "On Her Own" depicts Eleanor's relentless drive to help society and to use her influence in productive ways. The book, while short, weaves together traditional biographical writing with accomplished story telling. It highlights not only Eleanor but the historical period she lived in giving situational context and background history on the social and political challenges of the time.

Formatting decisions, including the way footnotes and endnotes are structured, were certainly not the choice of the author as the book is part of a biographical series in which all books would need to follow the same format. In condemning the book for a percieved lack of correct citations is short-sighted and with this opinion you risk missing out on a great, short biography of one of the most influential and respected women of the 20th century.

Quick Easy Great Read

I'm sorry if I don't have a lot to say but I think reviews sometimes give away too much information (like reading the back of a dvd and learning too much before seeing the movie) I also have noticed that many "critics" complain a lot ;)

I loved this book. It was more than I expected and seemed thorough. I was up late reading it into the wee hours of the morning and fascinated with details I never knew.

I also had NO idea just how much she helped her husband in his politics. She was amazing.
