About the Author

Flavio Junqueira is a member of the research staff of Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK. He holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego. He is interested in various aspects of distributed systems, including distributed algorithms, concurrency, and scalability. He is an active contributor of Apache projects, such as Apache ZooKeeper (PMC chair and committer) and Apache BookKeeper (committer). When he is idle, he sleeps.

Benjamin Reed is a Software Engineer at Facebook working on all things small. His previous positions include Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research (working on all things big) and Research Staff Member (working on the big and the small) at IBM Almaden Research. The University of California, Santa Cruz granted him a PhD in computer science. He has worked in the areas of distributed computing, big data processing, distributed storage, systems management, and embedded frameworks. He participated in various open source projects such as Hadoop and Linux. He helped start the Pig, Zookeeper, and BookKeeper projects hosted by the Apache Software Foundation.

Required reading for distributed system developers and operators

If you're implementing or operating a distributed computing system, some part of your application is going to need asynchronous consensus. Whether your application requires leader election, work queues, synchronized configuration, or similar functionality with asynchronous consensus at its core, you need to use ZooKeeper. Do not try to implement asynchronous consensus yourself! It takes a huge amount of effort to get the underlying algorithms right, to get the programming interface right, and to tune the implementation for real-world operation. The ZooKeeper authors have dedicated years of their lives to solving this problem, so you don't have to do it yourself.

That said, ZooKeeper is a power tool and you can easily cause service outages if you don't use it properly. This book is required reading, because it allows the rest of us to benefit from Flavio and Ben's years of experience working with the ZooKeeper user community. For example, Chapter 5 (Dealing with Failures) gives some very important advice to developers on how to handle connection loss exceptions and return codes. Following the authors' advice leads to quick recovery from transient server failures; ignoring the advice could cause customer-visible performance issues. Another example: Chapter 10 (Running ZooKeeper) starts with a use case that describes how a simple configuration issue resulted in a severe production outage. This kind of configuration issue is now easily preventable if you read this book, understand how ZooKeeper works, and follow the guidance of the authors.

Over the last few weeks, I've been deploying and testing a critical, customer-facing service at Altiscale that uses ZooKeeper for distributed configuration management. Thanks to this book, I was able to learn ZooKeeper quickly, understand our application-level code, deploy (and redeploy) our ZooKeeper servers without any production incidents, and document new processes for testing our ZooKeeper service.

A Reference thats been needed for a long time

A book on ZooKeeper has been needed for a long time. The author walks one through setting up and using Zookeeper; this can be contrasted with the small ZooKeeper section in the Hadoop book. This book is much more thorough and in depth coverage of the topic. While I'm still working through the examples and learning, I can say that it is filling a knowledge void that I've been desperate to address for a long time. (BTW -- I pre-ordered this several months ago)

Engaging read

I really feel like i 'get' zookeper after reading this book. It presents zookeeper in the context of consumers of the service and provides both java and 'c' sample code. It also gets into the internals of zookeeper itself (I must confess that I skimmed this chapter). Top notch information on a fresh approach to distributed systems co-ordination. Definitely worth the money (and more importantly) time.

This is a beautifully put together book on Bondage. The pictures are in bright living color and the detail, that went into this book, were right on and explain the finer acts of both Bondage and BDSM. It is both an illistrated book on Bondage and a fine Artbook as well. It is one of the better books in my extensive library of BDSM I have as a writer.

A Luxurious Journey to a Land of Rope, Skin, Sensations, and Kink!

Bondage Basics takes you on a luxurious journey to a land of rope, skin, sensations, and kink. Through Morpheous's rich prose, you can not only melt into the captivating imagery, but you can truly learn how to wow a new lover, talk shop with a rigger, seduce a rope bunny, or spice up your established love life. The stunning array of shibari "glamcore" photographs help to comfort even the most tentative of early-stage kinksters as they begin their journey into the amazingly sexy and sensual world of modern rope bondage. While I was reading this book, I felt my senses and imagination pulled in multiple directions. This book is a joy to read because it combines history, sex, art, and puzzle solving in a manner that isn't intimidating or raunchy. To clarify, part of me wanted to immediately acquire a bundle of cotton and jute fibers, twisted lovingly and meticulously by one of the rope making masters. Another part of me wanted to put on some eyelashes and let myself flow into a rope bondage scene as others admire how each layer of knots compliment my skin tone. Yet another part of me wanted to put on my glasses, sit down, and practice tying each and every knot that is outlined in this entry-level text that's complete with a plethora of helpful photos. It can be hard to choose what urge to satisfy first, but this book is certainly not only an art piece, an instruction manual, and an informational guide to the history of rope bondage. Loved It- Good For the Holidays or Any Time

I got tingly with excitement when I saw that one of Charlie Richard's books was coming out before Christmas. Love the stories and it is always one of my not so guilty pleasures to grab up these shorter tales to read about one of her paranormal couples and how they find each other.

Many of the books in this series and the other inter-weaving series in Charlie Richard's paranormal world can be read slightly out of order, but this is not one of them. This story follows on the heels of Second Chance to Mate and involves many of the same players and an ongoing plot.

It opens with Abbott having replaced his father as the local pack alpha and now needing to form up the other leader positions. He is well aware that he has opposition from another wolf, Delorian, and his group, but he knows he is strong enough to take him on.

But then his brother, Alaric along with Alaric's new mate get weird and mysterious on him insisting that Crane's brother, Richard needs to be at the trials and that Abbott needs to meet him in person. No sooner does Richard arrive at Alaric's home then Abbott gets a shock. Richard is his mate and Richard already knew this.

Richard raced over to Alaric's home at Crane's urgent request only to discover that his brother set him up. Richard had scented Abbott as his mate a while ago, but he postponed their meeting to give Abbott time to settle into his new role and to not rock the boat with the members of the pack who wouldn't welcome a male mate for their alpha. Trouble is, he can see that Abbott is one ticked off wolf over the deception. Richard needs to talk fast and take the anger and hurt out of his mate's expression.

From the very beginning, I enjoyed this one. Strong plot, well developed characters and nice pace. I loved where this plot was going with the outside conflict that Abbott and Richard would deal with in the pack and I loved a few of the more subtle relationship dynamics they had to iron out. Richard is a strong wolf who has been burned by authority figures in his last pack so he assumes he'll just micro-manage a bit with Abbott. Abbott is a true alpha and he needs Richard to trust him and submit. Abbott also has a lesson to learn about what it truly means to have a fated mate. I loved these guys together whether it is their fiery loving or their fighting back to back.

This is part of the Kontra series, but there isn't much contact with Kontra's pack in the story. I didn't mind though I do look forward to more adventures when the bike pack hits the road. The cute scene at the end with the two packs enjoying fun times ice-skaing, BBQing, decorating and lighting the tree was adorable.

One of the best and I look forward to more in the series.

So much potential....

but it fell short both in length and in substance. There was simply so little character development that I found myself struggling to even place the names of the characters with the other stories. A 777 could fly through the plot holes throughout the book. However, what irritated me the most is the price. For a book this expensive it should be 3-4 times the length with better far better content and proper editing. It should be noted that on my kindle EVERY chapter ended with 2-3 BLANK pages. So with as many chapters as this book has you can cut something like 15-20% off the length of this already short book. Save your money. As a loyal fan who's bought nearly every book she's ever published I am very disappointed with this one and the lack of effort that went into it. This may well be the last of her books that I read unless either the price drops to .99 (which would be about all its worth) or the quality of her books improve to the standards she had for her earlier works.

It is worth unwrapping this story

I didn't like the last Kontra's Menagerie story but this is much more enjoyable. These stories are never long enough but at lease with this one you get character development, relationship excitement and an some treachery (for good measure). Abbot is the new Alpha of the Tamang Pack. Crain's brother Richard has joined him and is keeping on the edge of the pack, not going near the new Alpha - because he knows the Alpha is his mate and there is dissension in the ranks that he is trying to investigate. Richard was an Enforcer in his last pack and is looking to protect his mate. Then Abbot and Richard meet, Abbot is less than happy that his mate has been kept from him and has been deliberately not bringing the matters to his attention. However, he wants his mate...but must wait, much to his frustration, until after the challenge for position for Beta and Enforcers. Richard is a strong wolf, he isn't suited to be just Alpha Mate, he can't have those less strong than himself telling him what to do so he needs a position equal to his strength as a wolf. Abbot was married to a human woman who died. Richard hasn't bottomed, but isn't afraid to be with his Alpha. There is treachery when one of the inner circle turns on the Alpha and his mate.
Good story, engaging and has depth. Nice job Charlie Richards, bring on the next one please.
