counselor and group therapist I found this book to be a wonderful, refreshing read

As a former teacher, counselor and group therapist I found this book to be a wonderful, refreshing read. From a thorough and at times painstaking review of modern science and quantum physics Dr Rowland challenges the prevailing view that consciousness is simply a product of our material brain. He proposes instead that our “conscious mind” is independent of our material self and is part of the mysterious non-material energy that scientists now acknowledge is an integral part of the universe. From his medical experience as a doctor and his special interest in mental health Gavin then proposes that his new model of understanding adds new and revealing insights into psychology and the mental health of all human beings. This was a life-changing book for me that will take pride of place on my shelf of reading treasures. I highly recommend this book to anyone as a fascinating insight into who we are and especially to all health professionals and those folk who continue to insist that our conscious self is simply a product of the grey matter between our ears.

Will change your view of how your mind and the world actually works

A fascinating and courageous book that's given me a new perspective on not only the human mind but also the world and universe. I say courageous because despite being a practising doctor, Rowland is prepared to explore the limitations of current scientific knowledge and advance a unique and compelling new theory. The book also explains many scientific principles in a clear and easy to understand way. Definitely worth a read.

Daniel Giordan is an artist, photographer, and creative professional who takes pride in sharing his passion for digital design with those eager to create digital art. There's an old saying that "Sometimes the worst thing in the world is to get what you want." This just might be the case with the Art of Photoshop books as they continue to grow in complexity, detail, and nuance with each new volume. And yet, I guess I wouldn't have it any other way. I consider dynamic imagery and compelling source material to be requisites for any design book.

When I started writing, my books were straightforward text-based volumes with the occasional screen shot. The layouts were done by someone else and the images were scavenged from whatever royalty-free stock photo house we could find. As I continued writing, things slowly began to change. I started taking my own photos for the How to Use Photoshop books, and took control of the layout with Art of Photoshop. With this book, I've added a new thematic variable that I hope results in a cohesive volume that is even more instructive and informative—Tuscany.

Initially, this book presents itself as a digital photography travel book, drawing its inspiration and photo resources from the Tuscan region of Italy. In addition to featuring the images I shot during a photo trek through the area, the book also includes stories and commentary about how the images were captured, technical challenges, and overall aesthetic impressions. Thus, the book you're holding is an instruction guide for how to capture digital images, an inspiration for what to shoot, and a behind-the-scenes commentary on how the general impressions of a region translated into tangible digital images.

All the images in this book were captured with a Nikon D2H digital SLR camera and a wide range of external lenses. I used a Manfrotto Carbon Fiber tripod, an electronic cable release, and a host of various filters and attachments.

I mention this so that readers will have a point of reference regarding the equipment used to create the images in this book. Users who don't have an SLR camera, tripod, or other accessories mentioned here will experience different results, although the basic photographic principles are the same regardless of what equipment is used. As mentioned elsewhere in the book, my suggestion is that you use a digital SLR as a bare minimum, along with a stable camera support and cable release. This combination will allow you to follow most of the procedures outlined in the upcoming chapters.

Each image that appears in the book is accompanied by a profile of how it was created. Specifically, it lists the camera used, f-stop, shutter speed, and focal length. Occasionally, I used exposure compensation on an image, and this data is listed as well, using an "EV" designation followed by a positive or negative compensation value. In addition, all images were captured at ISO 200 to ensure optimum resolution detail, except as otherwise noted.

This book is also about Photoshop. Although the first part of the book looks at how to take a good picture, the second part features explorations that show you how to bring those images into Photoshop and push things further. Some of the explorations teach alternative photo techniques such as cyanotypes and hand coloring, while others are more artistic and painterly. Part 2, "Photoshop Explorations," is not exhaustive by any means, but it does provide a solid base for how you can transform a photograph into a digital design.

The final part, "Gallery," presents my own vision for exploring and interpreting the Tuscan region. It presents a suite of eight finished works, along with step-by-step details for how they were created, following the familiar format of the original Art of Photoshop book.

The result is a book that provides a glimpse into my impressions of the Tuscan region and how those impressions were channeled and molded into finished works of art. Split Personality

I was really excited when I first looked at this book. I regularly complain that many ostensible photography manuals are really picture books that have had some language added to make them look like photography instruction books. Here was a book that had plenty of beautiful pictures of Tuscany that were really used as a framework for instruction. Then I discovered the book's split personality.

The first part of the book is aimed at beginning to intermediate serious photographers. Using the author's own digital pictures, Giordan explained the basics of photography, including exposure, focus and composition. The pictures were not only lovely, but they were tied to the text so that they illuminated the teaching points. Giordan has a tendency to photograph details rather than the big picture, but perhaps that's also a useful lesson to learn. He also seems willing to tolerate over-exposed skies to get shadow details. But he passed my litmus test for any book maintaining it's about digital photography by explaining the use of the histogram, blinkies and even the zone system.

Unfortunately, he also put out some wrong information. For example, he states that digital cameras achieve exposure compensation by adjusting ISO ratings and so one should shoot in manual mode if one expected to compensate exposure. But that's certainly not true of the Nikon D2H, which Giordan used for the pictures in this book, or any other digital camera I know. Most digital cameras compensate with the aperture when you are in shutter mode and the shutter speed when you are in aperture mode. Moreover, while the author acknowledges that an important role of lenses of different focal lengths is to adjust perspective, he also preserves the old myth that depth of field is a function of focal length.

Still, even with inaccuracies like that, this book looked like a four-star book. Then the second section came along. It deals with the use of Photoshop and is aimed at very experienced users of the software rather than the beginning to intermediate audience of the first section. Here was an ideal opportunity to use the photographs of Tuscany to show how to control exposure, lighting and color with the basics of Photoshop. Instead he chose to use some very advanced techniques to create pictures that were far removed from the basics of digital processing. For example, in a chapter telling how to use Photoshop while preserving the photographic nature of the image, he shows how to simulate twilight or do the equivalent of hand coloring of photographs.

In the following chapter he explains how to modify images so they look like paintings or drawings. He finishes up with detailed descriptions of how he manipulated certain photographs to make them look like they weren't photographs.

I tried to put aside the philosophy that one should capitalize on the nature of photography when using Photoshop. I downloaded images from the companion website and tried to follow along with the author's description of how he was manipulating the pictures. I consider myself an experienced Photoshop user, but often the instructions were too sketchy or ambiguous for me to follow on a first try, and sometimes after several tries, I still couldn't follow Giordan's instructions.

This book had the potential to be really effective by taking a different approach to photography instruction. Unfortunately, the first part is filled with a few landmines and the second part is only for the most experienced Photoshop users for whom the first part might prove too simplistic.

Most beautiful Photoshop book ever!

This is the most beautiful Photoshop book I have ever seen.

Daniel Giordan has always been my favorite Photoshop author for his clarity and organization, and with this book he brings together his Photoshop expertise, his skills as a digital photographer, his art school training in traditional media, and his love of the land of his ancestors, Italy. He traveled through Tuscany taking photos.

He then created a book to instruct and inspire the digital photographer and he also shares with the reader the pleasures of traveling through Tuscany.

This book taught me new techniques to use in Photoshop and reminded me of things I had been neglecting that will optimize my digital photography, such as having my camera display histograms and using an off-camera shutter release when I am using a tripod to eliminate the camera movement from pressing a shutter button.

The design team is to be praised for creating a book design that is in itself an aesthetic pleasure. Daniel Giordan designed the cover and a David Giordan is listed as a designer of the interior.

This book makes the perfect gift for a photographer who uses Photoshop. A really great gift would include a holiday in Italy because after reading this book and looking at the marvelous variety of beautiful subjects, you will certainly want to take your own trip through Tuscany.

Another Fantastic Guide

One of the things I loved most about The Art of Photoshop was the detailed descriptions of the many intricate (and not-so-intuitive) features of Photoshop. The Art of Photoshop for Digital Photographers follows this same pattern, offering explanations of camera settings (f-stop, aperture, etc) and moving on to advanced editing/artistic techniques. The entire book revolves around the philosophy that while Photoshop can be used to make a mediocre picture good the artist can use Photoshop to make a fantastic photo better. This book seemed very personal; Giordan mixes stories from his travels in Tuscany with technical information, making this book an easier read than the Art of Photoshop.

In this version the stock photos are available to play with before one goes out and shoots their masterpiece :).

So once again detailed explanations leave the reader more empowered in front of the monitor. If you are looking for an easy, fast, quick, commercial guide, this is not the book for you. However, if you are interested in creation rather than imitation, you will be very pleased with this purchase.

Heartfelt and sexy......

I absolutely loved this book. This was my first time reading one of Mr. Murray's books and I was completely enthralled in it. Vivid, sexy, intelligent....I didn't want to put it down, and I'm not even a boxing fan. Christiana was hilarious and almost fearless, while Dante was tense and cautious, although he too had a great sense of humor. They made a very believable couple. I also loved that although Dante's Italian heritage was explored, Mr. Murray kept the interracial mention to a dull roar. It only mattered that they were man and woman, not white and black. It was a wonderful story that I could read again and again. This has inspired me to read more of Mr. Murray's books.

The Real Thing

I just love the story of Dante, and Tiana. It is a real love story for real people. The plot is warm, funny, and carries you along page after page. Dante is sexy, and stubborn. Tiana, is strong, lovely, and to the point. Kudos for a fighter with a big heart. Loved it......

Long on laughs, emotionally deep - A great summer read

Personality magazine reporter, Christiana Artis is bored stiff with interviewing people who are famous for no good reason. Too often they're as dumb as a box of rocks and half as interesting. She wants to return to interviewing everyday people who makes a difference in the lives of others. People who live their lives with a purpose.

Although ten years of anonymity have made Dante "Blood and Guts" Lattanza, former middleweight boxing champion less of a household name, it hasn't claimed his skill in the ring. He has a point to prove to the world, to his ex-wife and to himself. He isn't a loser. He's someone that she, his son and friends can once again be proud of.

However, it's not his return to the boxing ring that gains Christiana's attention. Nope, it's his becoming one of the Sexiest Men Alive that brings her to his door and sexy doesn't begin to describe Dante's chiseled good looks, perfect physique or smooth Italian tongue.

Could Dante be as deep and stimulating as he looks? Or is he, like so many other celebrities she's interviewed? As shallow as a kiddie pool?

Before Christiana can ask her first question, and confirm his lack of depth, Dante makes an arrangement with her. She can ask five questions. But she must first complete five tasks to get her answers. It's not long before the tasks turn to kisses and the questions to the satisfied moans of bliss. But when Christiana, breaks the rules and publishes his off-the-record comments, Dante once again remembers why he never trusted reporters, not even a sexy cioccolata one like Christiana.

Using his trademark wit and humor JJ Murray once again brings together two characters that are believable and easy to relate to in his latest summer read, "The Real Thing."

Dante's not only super sexy, he's all that a real man should be. Responsible, respectful and a great Dad to his son DJ. While Christiana is a heroine that female readers will see a bit of themselves in. Their lives isn't all that they want them to be, but they're working to get them there. And when tough times come, they don't throw in the towel, they reinforce their battlements and charge on toward their end goal. For Christiana, that's remembering not only her roots, but how those roots shaped her into the reporter she is today. While, for Dante, that's winning back the love of his life...now if only he could get his heart and his sense of honor to agree on who that is.

Long on laughs, yet emotionally deep, "The Real Thing" is a refreshing story of two regular people...even if one of them is famous....who simply want an everlasting love to last the ages.

Inborn Metabolic Diseases, edited by Fernandes et al., is a pleasure to read. This book, "written by clinicians for clinicians," is in its third edition and seems to have come of age. It is a cohesive and authoritative work covering the fast-growing field of inborn errors of metabolism. In their preface, the editors refer readers to the latest edition of Molecular and Metabolic Bases of Inherited Disease (C. Scriver et al., eds. New York: McGraw-Hill, 2000) for more detailed information. The latter book is the primary reference work in this field, but Inborn Metabolic Diseases is in many ways complementary. Clinicians working in the field, as well as those who see patients with inborn errors of metabolism less frequently, will find this book a wonderful companion. It covers briefly but comprehensively disorders of carbohydrate, amino acid, and mitochondrial energy metabolism, as well as disorders of neurotransmitters, lipids, nucleic acid and heme metabolism, and metal transport and disorders related to organelles.

Although the majority of the 61 authors are European, a substantial number are from North America. In this third edition, almost half the authors are new, and there are also new chapters. The useful first chapter, on the clinical approach to inherited metabolic diseases, includes a brief paragraph on adults who present with inborn errors of metabolism -- reminding us that this field is by no means confined to pediatrics. A new chapter on the present status and new trends in treatment provides the reader with a clear understanding of the principles involved. There are also new chapters on metabolic disorders involving leukotrienes, cholesterol synthesis, creatine, and proline and serine. There is a welcome section on congenital defects of glycosylation. (It is remarkable that this group of disorders, known as carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein [CDG] disorders when first described in the 1980s, has managed to undergo a change in name with scarcely a ripple of discontent, and with no change in the abbreviation.)

A good feature of the book is its uniformity. Each chapter starts with a single page on the biochemical features of the disorder in question, sometimes with a little physiological information, and the relevant biochemical pathway. Most of the individual disorders are discussed under the same headings: clinical presentation, metabolic derangement, diagnostic tests, treatment and prognosis, and genetics. This homogeneity makes the book extremely easy to use.

Some chapters deal with groups of disorders. Although this is inevitable in some instances, in others, more detailed discussions of the individual disorders might have been preferable. This is true of the chapter on mucopolysaccharidoses and oligosaccharidoses, and perhaps also the chapters on defects of fatty-acid oxidation and the urea cycle. But these are quibbles.

The third edition has been updated, with most chapters containing numerous references from the latter half of the 1990s. This is an invaluable book for anyone seeking a short, practical, authoritative work on inborn errors of metabolism, and the authors are to be congratulated.

The two-volume Metabolic Diseases: Foundations of Clinical Management, Genetics, and Pathology, by Gilbert-Barness and Barness, is quite different from Inborn Metabolic Diseases and will probably appeal to a different readership. It covers a larger range of inborn errors, including, for example, endocrine disorders and calcium metabolism -- a mammoth task for the two authors. They state that their primary aim is "to present clinical phenomena we have observed, along with the underlying physiologic and pathologic changes," in the tradition of Osler. The two volumes contain numerous clinical and pathological photographs of excellent quality, as well as many tables and diagrams. The sections on pathology are particularly welcome, because they contain information that is difficult for clinicians dealing with metabolic disease to obtain. The book offers a wealth of clinical details and useful observations.

However, several problems detract from this work. It is uneven in both style and content. For example, five pages are devoted to Farber's disease, an extremely rare lysosomal-storage disorder, but only 11 lines to cystinuria, a common and important transport disorder leading to the formation of renal stones, often in children. Up to a point, such imbalances do not matter, but they may reduce the value of the book as a reference work.

More disturbing is the discovery that several sections have uncertain or outdated information. For example, the clinical and pathological manifestations of homocystinuria due to deficient formation of methylcobalamin (cobalamin C, D, E, F, and G disorders) are said to be similar to those of homocystinuria due to cystathionine synthase deficiency, the "classic" form of homocystinuria. However, this statement is certainly not in accord with the literature or with the experience of most physicians. The chapter on disorders of fatty-acid oxidation does not mention very-long-chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency, an important disorder in this group, but contains an extensive section on long-chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency, even though a deficiency of this distinct enzyme has not clearly been shown to be associated with any described disorders. The problem may be a recurrent typographical error. There are a number of such errors in the book.

Although the chapters have valuable lists of references, there are relatively few from the past five or six years. This omission is particularly problematic in some sections -- for example, the section on disorders of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, a fast-moving field.

Some of these shortcomings may reflect the time required to assemble such a large work, as well as the personal views and preferences of the two authors, who are giants in the field. The illustrations are a particularly strong feature of this book, which has clearly been a labor of love.

the most usefull guide to inherited metabolic disease

I'm now into the vast subject of inherited metabolic diseases for about one and a half year. This book is the perfect guide in dayly clinical work. It gives a short introduction at the first page of every chapter, showing the metabolic pathway and giving a short summery of the different types of metabolic defects in this part of metabolism. It's not only brief but also based on the recent publications. The very systematic structure and the much better index of this new edition is another reason why there is no day without Fernandez et al. in my clinical work.
