About the Author
Diana Kendall is Professor of Sociology at Baylor University, where she has been recognized as an Outstanding Professor. She has taught a variety of courses, including Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory (undergraduate and graduate), Sociology of Medicine, Sociology of Law, and Race, Class, and Gender. Previously, she enjoyed many years of teaching sociology and serving as chair of the Social and Behavioral Science Division at Austin Community College. Dr. Kendall's areas of specialization and primary research interests are sociological theory and the sociology of medicine. Her books include SOCIOLOGY IN OUR TIMES: THE ESSENTIALS (Cengage Learning, 2016), THE POWER OF GOOD DEEDS: PRIVILEGED WOMEN AND THE SOCIAL REPRODUCTION OF THE UPPER CLASS (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002), MEMBERS ONLY: ELITE CLUBS AND THE PROCESS OF EXCLUSION (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008), and FRAMING CLASS: MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS OF WEALTH AND POVERTY IN AMERICA, 2nd Edition (Rowman & Littlefield, 2012). Her most recent scholarly publication is "Class: Still Alive and Reproducing in the United States," a book chapter in PRIVILEGE: A READER, 4th Edition (2016, Westview Press). Dr. Kendall is actively involved in national and regional sociological associations, including the American Sociological Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and the Southwestern Sociological Association. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was invited to membership in Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

About the Author
Christian Picciolini is an award-winning television producer, a visual artist, and a reformed extremist. His work and life purpose are born of an ongoing and profound need to atone for a grisly past, and to make something of his time on this planet by contributing to the greater good. After leaving the violent hate movement he was part of during his youth, he began the painstaking process of rebuilding his life. Picciolini earned a degree in International Business and International Relations from DePaul University, began his own global entertainment and media firm, and was appointed a member of the Chicago Grammy Rock Music Committee and the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival. In 2010 and 2011, he was nominated for three regional Emmy Awards for his role as executive producer of JBTV, one of America's longest-running nationally broadcast music television programs. He has worked as an adjunct professor at the college level, and as the community partnerships manager for Threadless, a company that combines a thriving online art community with a highly successful e-commerce business model. Additionally, in 2013, he contributed to Google Chairman Eric Schmidt's and Director of Google Ideas Jared Cohen's New York Times best seller, The New Digital Age. Most notably, in 2010 he co-founded Life After Hate, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities and organizations gain the knowledge necessary to implement long-term solutions that counter all types of racism and violent extremism. An explorer by nature, Picciolini loves to learn new things and thrives on challenging himself with "positive disruptive thinking." Exceptional Memoir

RV was an exceptional memoir. For Picciolini's end goal to work, to convince others of his change, his efforts took a lot of sincerity. I was originally motivated by the promise on the book cover that he would be reformed by the end combined with my base desire to know what violence he committed. How deep into hatred did he go?

(At first my real uneasiness with the movement was not relating to racism. I'm a woman, and it irked me that his was another destructive war story. Naturally, he speaks from the point of view of a man who not only surrounded himself by men for masculine guidance, but he was drawn into an addictively violent world, a man's world that needed girls and women for arm candy and pistol whipping. If this bothers you, stick with it. He redeems himself in the way he talks of women in the second half.)

Back to the core of it, the challenge was for the memoirist to speak from a present, reformed, even loving state of mind - as if he were in the past making his motivations real for the reader. To convince us of his reformation, he had to show us how much he hated anyone different from him and then how far he came in accepting them. You should see for yourself how he earns your belief.

I've had only small brushes with racism myself, but the story will speak to anyone who holds regret for the past or time wasted. He planted a lot of thorny seeds that may still be growing and there is clearly an ache left from that arrested development and crushing loss that taught him hard lessons. He has moved forward in love, though. I can only hope now that he fully understands, he was only a child when it started.

Romantic Violence

One of the reasons I read memoirs is to understand someone who has had an experience nothing like anything I ever have or will. In this case, to get a handle on something I haven't been exposed to and don't understand. The book was queued to my Kindle for reading when Dylann Roof, a white supremacist, gunned down several people in South Carolina. I decided it was time to push it up the list.

Romantic Violence is at times infuriating and frustrating (knowing where it is headed and having 20/20 hindsight) while also being scary as it is easy to imagine how almost anyone in the same situation could get sucked in to an extremist organization like this. I also noticed that the terminology and rhetoric of a racist right-wing group is much the same as other extremist right-wing organizations that don't have the racist component. (Left-wing groups have their own set of touchpoints, I'd guess.) As intense as a good thriller, made more so by being true.

I felt nearly side by side with the author as I read the chapters about his youth. Some of the scenes are hard to read--my heart ached for everyone. But the story moves to bitter, painful soul-searching and redemption at the end, as the author becomes self-aware.

The book includes many photographs, which are a real plus. I spent almost as much time studying the pictures as I did reading the words.

This is not a book I would normally ever read. It's hard for me to imagine a background more different from my own. But the story impacts, perhaps for the reason the author states at the end: our common humanity.

About the Author

Dr David Whittaker is a Lecturer at Birkbeck College, University of London. His research interests are in the areas of Nigerian and African literature and in the field of postcolonial studies and he has published a number of articles in journals and anthologies.

Dr Mpalive-Hangson Msiska is a Senior Lecturer in English and Humanities at Birkbeck College, University of London. He has published many books, journal articles and conference papers on postcolonial literature, critical and cultural theory and identity.

Not the actual story

I bought this in an attempt to help my sister with an English project, but it is not the actual novel and instead was a discussion of the original work and other works seen to be related to Achebe's, "Things Fall Apart." I was very disappointed in that there was no indication of it not being the real story, as translations and edited versions of books often have another person's name tacked on it. Hopefully the actual version of the book will make it to Kindle, but for now only the printed edition is available.

I too was very disappointed in finding out only after purchasing that this was not the actual book. Being my very first purchase I felt that this description was very misleading. I certanly hope that kindle recognizes this as a problem as I find it hard to believe that I just happened upon the one and only misrepresented book description. Now back to the users guide to find out how and even if I can receive a refund for the purchase of this book. Buyers beware.

A Critical Muddle

This book is a shame in relation to its stated mission to offer a guide to the iconic novel Things Fall Apart in the boader context of its history, politics, culture, and sociology. There is some confusion about the book's design. The compilers ("authors" is inapplicable here) make little attempt to extend understanding of the novel as a work of art. Apart from the not-particularly informative Introduction and prefaces to its various sections, the volume comprises in the main of excerpted essays. The collators of these documents present an alternative approach readers have taken to the novel, and then look for an excerpt from an essay to illustrate it. The down-side to this approach is that anyone seriously looking for comprehensive knowledge would be better off consulting the full essay in its original source. All still in print and readily available, none of these essays is by any account inaccessible; therefore, the volume is not as invaluable as hoped. The compilers' approach will disappoint readers who are already familiar with the excerpted essays. Lacking in novelty, I'll take any of the competing titles over this over-priced one anyday. At any event, this book could not have been conceived for the specialist; it does not treat its subject at an adequate level of rigor. Being far too derivate, it will not be much use either to the beginning student.

About the Author
Anna Kerchy is a Senior Assistant Professor and a member of the Gender Studies Research Group at the Institute of English and American Studies at the University of Szeged, Hungary. She holds a PhD in Literature from the University of Szeged and a DEA in Semiology from Universite Paris VII. Her monograph Body-Texts in Angela Carter: Writing from a Corporeagraphic Point of View (2008) offers a corporeal narratological analysis of self-enfreaked embodiments' feminist potentials. One of her major research interests centers on the figure of the freak in Victorian and postmodern fantastic imagination, and intermedial cultural representations. Andrea Zittlau is an Assistant Professor in the Department for American Studies and a Coordinator of the Graduate School program Cultural Encounters and Discourses of Scholarship at the University of Rostock, Germany. She wrote her PhD thesis about the representation of Native American cultures in ethnographic museums. Her current research concentrates on ethnographic and medical museums, as well as on freakery and the medical body.

Honest portrait of a sensitive subject

Once upon a time, Sam and Charlie were best friends. But then Sam ended the friendship-no explanations, no nothing. Now, one year later, Sam has a secret he's finding harder and harder to keep, and Charlie's dealing with an emotionally absent dad and an all-too-present dealer. The ex-best friends are thrown together once again when they have no one else to turn to.

I find myself hooked from the first page. This book deals with friendship or the disintegration of one through the eyes of two teen boys. Each teen wonders why the friendship ended and both go on paths that though destructive lead them back to each other.

P.E. Ryan has written an honest and very real portrait of a sensitive subject. Not preachy but an accurate description of the conflict that must go through a teen's mind when dealing with his sexual orientation.

This book has an important message--it's okay to be yourself.

I'd highly recommend this book.

Honest and true

This is a very, very good entry into the growing number of gay-themed young adult fiction - many of which have good intentions but are clunkily executed. If you want to see how a real writer writes, read this tale.

P.E. Ryan has convincingly written a story juggling two narrators, Sam and Charlie, and their separate struggles. Both young men, estranged from one another, have "lost" a parent yet continue to suffer alone. The events that led to the estrangement, and the fallout from it are presented realistically without any unnecessary melodrama or eye-rolling resolutions. I started the first chapters of the book not sure if I was all that interested in Charlie as a character, but Ryan drew me in and I was surprised by how absorbed I became and I couldn't put the book down until I was finished.

"Saints of Augustine" is a great read, better written than many other gay-themed YA books, and deserves to find a wider audience. Here's hoping it does.

Excellent YA

I was really refreshed by this book - it's honest and real and doesn't pull any punches. One of the other reviewers didn't like that it wasn't fleshed out more, but I found that part of the book's charm. Sam and Charlie are expertly drawn and I found that I cared about them from the get-go. Ryan interweaves their two stories expertly and avoids any stereotyping or easy solutions. I think both guys and girls will be able to relate. A great summer read!

Absolutely Superb Traditional Chinese Martial Arts

Previous reviewers who criticize this work based on their perception of impracticality have essentially missed the author's point. Martial arts literature does not have to present itself as a 'cookbook' in order to be useful.
Anyone who has had more than a casual introduction to martial arts understands that Leung Shum is one of the most knowledgeable masters of traditional Chinese kungfu in North America. The system he has studied for most of his life--Northern Eagle Claw (Faan Tzi Ying Jow Pai) kungfu--is legendary for it's devastating effectiveness, and is respected as one of the most comprehensive fighting systems ever devised. Anyone claiming this system as ineffectual has simply misunderstood the methods and aims of traditional training.
As pointed out by other reviewers, this work is not intended to serve as a technique-by-technique how-to, or as a catalog of "quick n' easy" self defense scenarios. Instead, it provides a solid, encyclopedic reference to some of the core principles ("secrets" if you like) of the Eagle Claw system. Also, the book does not serve well as an entry-level text. The reader should have at least some background in, or strong desire to understand traditional Chinese martial arts.

Reference vs Learning

As a student of Sifu Shum for 10 years, I can verify that the contents of this book are verbatim for the lessons learned studying at Ying Jow Pai in New York City. Having said that, it should be obvious to any serious student that you will not learn a martial art by reading a book. You need to have a good teacher, and you need to practice constantly and diligently. Books such as these are for reference, to make clear and correct what you would learn from a legitimate teacher. The opponents' distance is for clarity of technique, not to demonstrate an actual attack. Comments from some other reviewers indicate they don't know the difference between learning a technique and actually using one. Eagle Claw locks are devastatingly effective, but are also difficult to learn to use effectively. In my years of training in NY, I have both used and seen used the techniques described in this book, and they certainly work. Sifu Shum is very careful about what he releases with the Ying Jow Pai name attached to it, and this book is a perfect example of the quality he demands from his students and the care he takes in disseminating the system.

Excellent book by an excellent teacher

The author of this book, Leung Shum, is a true master of Eagle Claw kung fu. He is the inheritor of the style, so the aunthenticity and quality of this book is of the highest standard.
The reviewer who keeps writing the same bad review over and over again obviously knows absolutely nothing about kung fu. He doesn't realize that the techniques in this book are the beginners training techniques of a complex kung fu system, not simple self-defense moves. This reviewer says "the locks are too complicated to use in a real fight". Some of the techniques are complicated, and they require lots of practice. But after they are mastered they can be executed in a split second by a skilled martial artist. This what separates martial arts from self defense; self defense is simple and easy to use, while martial arts are very complex and take many years to master. Marial arts can only be learnt directly from a master, people who think they can read a book and suddenly be able to use the techniques in fighting do not understand martial arts.
The reviewer also says that kung fu is only for looks. It is understandable that someone would say this because the movements in kung fu are often very unsusual, and look as though they have no value as a fighting technique. This is part of the mystery of kung fu, in reality every movement is a powerful fighting technique.
The book is well made and the pictures are of high quality. A person cannot learn kung fu from books, but this book is very good for getting familiar with authentic Eagle Claw, studying the comlicated techniques of this style, and learning the basic priciples of this style. The book also includes the 108 locking techniques of Eagle Claw, which have previously been kept secret for many years. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in learning about this style. It is rare that such a distinguished master such as Leung Shum writes a book, most books written on the subject of kung fu are written by unqualified masters.

After an introduction covering the proportions of the adult male, the adult female, and the infant at various ages, the author devotes 50 pages to the human skeletal system. Besides pictures and detailed drawings of the major bones of the body, he also includes x-rays showing the bone structure of the hand and foot and the movements of the shoulder, elbow, and knee joints.
A section on the muscular system follows, including reproductions of the remarkable Albinus engravings ("The most beautiful and among the most accurate anatomical figures ever published."—Charles Singer), 36 photographs and labeled sketches of living models, and seven drawings showing the attachments of muscles to the skeleton. Couldn't agree more with the two previous posts about it being better
than most of the $20.00 anatomy books. this cheap book gives you a more
clear and concise view of human anatomy, perfect for beginners, and even
professionals, restated save your money buying fancy anatomy books, i find
it funny how i own majority of the top art anatomy books but yet i have this on my desk, and $400.00 worth of art anatomy books stored in the closet, interesting photos believe it or not this dull black and white 1935 edition with it's simplicity, and thorough lessons, your knowledge of anatomy will improve fast, BELIEVE ME THIS IS A MUST BUY...

Has helped me a great deal.

My knee has been bad for years. I went to a chiropractor and he made it much worse. I couldn't walk without the use of a cane, and there were many screams of pain even using a cane. The book is a quick read, and the exercises are very simple. You almost figure they are to simple to do much good, but I started it and within just 2 days I had far less scream coming out of my mouth from intense knee pain. I have been doing the exercises for a week and my knee feels so much better. I am using the cane far less and figure that if I keep at the exercises that i will be able to walk again without pain.

The author is an expert. I wish he had a book on feet. I would get that one too.
